Chapter 117: Chapter 117: A Ghost Story for You
The thought of the delicious food awaiting them was like an invisible force, compelling them to dash forward with no regard for anything else.
They would have jumped headfirst into a pit if one appeared.
The preceding was an excerpt from the memoirs of the foodie sisters.
The sky was in that pre-dawn state, not yet light but no longer completely dark. Fueled by their passion to find Boss Lu, the sisters looked at the obstacle blocking their path and felt the urge to belt out a heroic anthem.
Picture a graveyard, shrouded in mist.
Rows of tombstones stood erect. Seen through the hazy mist, they looked like flickering shadows of people.
Faintly, the sound of mournful, resentful weeping drifted over, a lament that sobbed and swirled through the air.
This pack of "tigers" barred the path ahead, causing the two girls, who had taken a shortcut, to clutch each other’s hands, neither daring to let go.
"Don’t be scared. The sun’s about to come up."
"It’s just a normal graveyard. There are no ghosts."
"Once we get through here, we can find Boss Lu."
"Pancakes... Think about those big, round pancakes."
Mumu comforted Tian Tian, though her own voice trembled.
’Who says Cultivators can’t be afraid of ghosts?’
"Let’s sing..."
Tian Tian suggested, swallowing nervously as she felt the slick, cold sweat coating both their palms.
"Arise, arise..."
Mumu took the lead, abandoning any attempt to maintain her sweet voice and simply belting out the lyrics at the top of her lungs.
Her loud, piercing singing was a winding road of off-key notes.
Even the sinister, terrifying atmosphere of the graveyard was somewhat dispelled by the singing.
Amidst their caterwauling, Tian Tian faintly heard a noise to her left—SWISH SWISH SWISH—like the sound of clothing brushing through the grass.
"A ghost! There’s a ghost!"
Unable to bear it any longer, Tian Tian screamed, grabbed Mumu, and ran for her life with her head down.
’What kind of messed-up GPS is this? I’m filing a complaint as soon as I get back.’
The two of them sprinted with their heads down, not daring to glance back. Mumu felt like they had run a great distance, but the faint footsteps behind them kept drawing closer.
"Don’t eat me!"
Mumu yelled.
"Then who should it eat?"
Tian Tian’s eyes widened. ’What happened to holding hands and facing this together? So much for our bond!’
"You’re a vegetarian, so your meat is probably more tender."
Mumu stated with sound reasoning.
"You’re a carnivore, so your meat is fatty enough to be cooked any way!"
Tian Tian shot back.
As she spoke, she tried to pull her hand away, but Mumu gripped it tightly.
’Good sisters die together! We will not be fake friends!’
Perhaps their conversation was just too bizarre, because the pursuing footsteps behind them suddenly vanished.
Sensing this, the two saw a glimmer of hope and continued to sprint forward with renewed vigor.
"Hey, hey, hey! Can you hear me?"
A man’s voice suddenly echoed across the graveyard. It was clear and crisp, with no trace of Yin Qi.
"A male ghost! Don’t even think about luring me in!"
Mumu sneered, her expression one of sagely wisdom, as if she had seen through the entire plot. ’It knows I’m a sucker for nice voices, so it’s trying to bait me with an Illusion Technique, huh?’
The voice came again.
"First, I’m not a male ghost."
Mumu: ’Whoever believes that is an idiot.’
"Second, you’ve been running in circles in this graveyard. If you want to get out, follow me."
Tian Tian: ’Ghosts really are full of lies.’
"Third, I know where to find the Boss Lu you’re looking for."
Mumu and Tian Tian: ’He knows Boss Lu! He must be telling the truth.’
The two exchanged a look and stopped. They then pulled out a host of offensive and defensive Spiritual Artifacts, arranging themselves in a battle stance.
’If we really see a ghost, we’ll unleash a wild barrage. No matter how strong it is, it’ll have to take the full combo.’
Seeing that the two of them had finally stopped their frantic running, a young man emerged from the graveyard.
He was handsome and refined, with a cheerful smile on his face. He even took the initiative to greet them.
"Hello. I’m a villager from Little Sea Village. My name is Cheng Yang, and today is the anniversary of my mother’s death."
Cheng Yang, who had come to pay respects at a grave only to be mistaken for a ghost, felt rather helpless.
’Our village just doesn’t like interacting with the outside world, that’s all. Why does every outsider we meet suspect we aren’t human?’
’There’s no future in being a ghost these days.’
Only when they saw a living, breathing person standing before them did the two girls finally believe him.
"The pancake boss is at the east entrance of the village. This path leads to the west entrance. Follow me."
Cheng Yang led the way, and the two quickly thanked him and followed.
As they passed numerous graves, Mumu carefully glanced around, her heart still pounding with lingering fear.
It wasn’t long before a main road appeared ahead. Looking back, they saw the entire graveyard was still shrouded in a thick fog.
"I’ll take you this far. Just follow this road and you’ll see Boss Lu."
Cheng Yang smiled and pointed down the road ahead, then turned to walk back toward the village.
"Hey, why don’t you come with us? I’ll treat you to some pancakes as thanks for showing us the way."
Tian Tian urged him to stay. Cheng Yang looked tempted for a moment, but ultimately shook his head and refused.
"Better not. Uncle Xia doesn’t let us eat pancakes. He says outside food isn’t clean."
"You two go on ahead."
Cheng Yang didn’t linger. His figure was quickly swallowed again by the thick fog.
Mumu grabbed Tian Tian’s arm, stopping her from trying again, and gave her a pointed look.
The two walked down the main road, and in no time, they heard the sound of conversation from not too far away.
A very familiar voice.
It was Boss Lu.
Mumu finally let out a breath she’d been holding. When Tian Tian turned to look, she saw Mumu’s forehead was beaded with cold sweat.
"What’s wrong with you?"
Tian Tian asked in confusion. ’Everything’s fine now, isn’t it? Why do you still look so spooked?’
"I have to tell you something. Don’t be scared."
After Tian Tian nodded, Mumu spoke, her voice trembling slightly.
"I saw a tombstone earlier..."
Mumu’s face paled slightly as she recalled the scene she had glimpsed earlier.
"A tombstone? I saw them too. What’s so scary about that?"
Tian Tian was even more confused.
"The name of the deceased on that tombstone... was Cheng Yang."
Cheng Yang?
Tian Tian remembered that the young man who had just led them was named Cheng Yang.
"Is it possible you read it wrong?"
Tian Tian’s expression changed too, but she still tried to argue.
"Impossible."
Mumu, confident in her eyesight, denied it flatly. Her heart was still pounding, THUMP-THUMP-THUMP.
Seeing the color drain from Tian Tian’s face, Mumu quietly let go of her hand and walked toward the stall.
’Everything I said was true, but the little scheme to distract my sister so I could order first was also real.’
’I’m such a schemer, hehe.’
"Boss Lu, we’re back! We’ll have three of each kind of pancake."
"Oh, and I like mine extra spicy."
The fragrant aroma of pancakes in the air chased away the last of the chill from Mumu’s body.
Her bright, limpid eyes were fixed on the stall, blinking again and again, unwilling to look away for even a second.
’To die by the pancake spatula would be a glorious end, even in the afterlife.’
"You tricked me!"
The startled Tian Tian finally snapped out of it. Seeing that Mumu had placed a huge order and that she would now have to wait a long time to eat, Tian Tian couldn’t care less about ghosts anymore.
She raised her hand to strike.
"Stop hitting me! I really didn’t lie to you!"
"Alright, alright, I was wrong! I’ll give you one of my pancakes, okay?"
"What? You want two? No way! You can beat me to death, and it’s still a no."
Watching the two of them chase each other around her stall in a game of cat and mouse, Lu Wu, who had inadvertently overheard a ghost story, calmly continued to spread the pancake batter.
’Scrape, scrape...’
