The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First

Chapter 237: Return Invitation

As soon as he finished speaking, the group automatically split into their respective factions—Omni Squad, the Special Operations Department’s Genesis Team, and Sunset Squad—each finding a place to rest.

Kevin Keane and Blake Blue walked straight to the nearby general manager’s office, pushing the door open to inspect it carefully. Inside, it was spotlessly clean with no signs of mutant creature damage. It was relatively safe.

Kevin turned to Luna Dawson, his tone carrying a trace of subtle concern. “Little Boss, you and your sister can sleep in here tonight. It’s safe and quiet.”

Miles Dawson immediately squeezed over, plopping his butt down at the office door. His vigilant eyes swept across the forty or fifty members of Omni Squad, his tone arrogant and protective. “Sis, you guys just stay in there. I’ll guard the door! If any blind fool dares to come make trouble, I’ll cripple them on the spot!”

When out on a mission, the rules had always been clear: except for the official Special Operations Department and Military Command, who distributed food uniformly, other private squads had to be responsible for their own rations.

Kyle Keith happened to walk over holding a few boxed meals. He had originally intended to invite Luna’s group to eat together, but upon reaching the door and hearing Miles’s words, his mouth twitched involuntarily. With a charming smile on his face, his voice was gentle. “Captain Dawson, would you like to eat with our Genesis Team?”

Luna looked up at Kyle, then caught sight of Clayton Churchill not far behind him, staring in their direction with eager anticipation. The dead memories instantly flooded back to her—she seemed to have promised to treat them to a meal before, having previously rejected his invitation to eat. She didn’t expect this guy to actually have the nerve to invite her again.

Luna sighed helplessly and said with a smile, “Captain Kessler, I’ll pay back that meal I owe you today. This one’s on me!”

After speaking, she waved at Clayton, gesturing for him to come over.

Clayton was dumbfounded on the spot, his inner thoughts running wild. He wondered, “Why is this vicious woman suddenly calling me over? Is she no longer worried about being implicated by Susan Vaughn?”

He looked hesitantly at Kyle. Seeing his own captain nod, he excitedly jogged over.

Just then, Sharon Sloan’s smug voice suddenly rang out. She deliberately raised her volume, afraid that no one would hear. “Omni Squads One, Two, and Three, line up to get your food!”

Saying this, she lifted her chin toward the tall man beside her.

The man immediately raised his hand, and several boxes of instant noodles and sausages appeared out of thin air, piling up on the ground. The sight made the eyes of the Omni Squad members light up.

Ever since Kensington Base introduced nutrient solutions, they only distributed one decent meal a day. It had been a long time since anyone had eaten such flavorful food. The Omni Squad members immediately formed a long line, collecting their food in an orderly manner.

Sharon stood off to the side, her face full of pride. She deliberately turned to look at Luna, the provocation in her eyes practically overflowing. Seeing that Luna was looking over, she raised her chin even higher, shouting loudly, “Howie, this mission is important. Add an extra braised egg for everyone!”

Braised eggs!

As soon as these words came out, even many people from the Genesis Team looked over, their eyes full of envy. One had to know that chickens were all mutated nowadays, and meat, eggs, and milk all contained neurotoxins. The only edible eggs were the vacuum-sealed braised eggs from before the apocalypse. They were absolutely scarce goods—eat one, and there was one less in the world!

Many pre-apocalyptic snacks had now been hyped up to astronomical prices in the base! In the commercial zone of Sector Four and the free trade market of Sector Five, some nostalgic snack shops were comparable to top luxury stores from before the apocalypse. You even had to verify your assets before entering, for fear that some smart aleck would recklessly rush in and start munching away, disregarding their own life.

Sharon gloated inwardly. She thought, “Only our OmniCorp has stocked up on massive amounts of supplies in advance, allowing us to occasionally hand out this kind of perk to our members.”

She didn’t believe that Luna wouldn’t be filled with jealousy upon seeing this! After all, even the boxed meals from the official Special Operations Department were nothing more than stewed dried beans and soy sauce dried potatoes, at most adding a little pork crackling to stewed mutant snake meat. After finishing that, they still had to supplement it with a tube of nutrient solution. How could that be as precious as her instant noodle combo?

But Luna only met her provocative gaze with a nonchalant smile.

That was it?

The next second, with a shift of her thoughts, Luna first cleared out the office behind her, then tossed a robot vacuum inside. “We’re sleeping here tonight. It needs to be cleaned properly, otherwise it’ll be uncomfortable.”

Immediately after, outside the office window, she whipped out an inflatable outdoor camping tent, fully equipped with camping string lights and a set of foldable camping tables and chairs. As the warm yellow lights clicked on, they instantly bathed that corner of the floor in a perfect, cozy atmosphere, forming a stark contrast with the dim and oppressive surroundings.

Seeing this, Kyle greeted Dylan DuPont, then led Clayton toward Luna’s tent.

At the same time, the Space Superpower User from the Special Operations Department also took out ten boxed meals and a small steamer from their space. It seemed this was the food the Special Operations Department had specifically prepared for this outdoor mission.

Kyle smiled gently at Luna. “Captain Dawson, I let Commander Ford know, so this time, we won’t stand on ceremony. We’ll let you foot the bill.”

Luna waved her hand and replied with a smile, “It’s fine, it’s fine. It’s nothing compared to how much you spent treating me to that meal.”

Kyle fell silent.

Luna smiled and invited the two into the tent. Several members of Sunset Squad were already sitting inside. Kevin had specifically left an empty seat by the window for Luna, which happened to offer a view of the rain outside and was the most comfortable spot.

Luna sat down, with Kyle and Clayton sitting opposite her.

During the day, the temperature was around thirty-one or thirty-two degrees Celsius. Thanks to this rain, by nighttime, the temperature had dropped to twenty-seven or twenty-eight degrees—neither cold nor hot, just right.

With a thought, Luna first set out two large basins of raw meat and bones behind her, along with a large basin of goat’s milk.

Rollo immediately wiggled over happily, burying his head and eating frantically. Pinky squatted to the side. With a single roll of its tongue, it flicked a large chunk of meat into its mouth, moving so fast it left an afterimage.

Rollo was simply a social butterfly in the animal kingdom. Pinky usually ate meat alongside Rollo, and the two little ones had a great relationship. In Luna’s eyes, bugs were protein, and meat was also protein—there wasn’t much difference. Moreover, Pinky was already a Fourth Order Superpower Frog. It usually hopped around hunting on its own and lived quite wildly.

On the other side, Little Tiger obediently squatted by Luna’s table, holding a can of meat and eating in small, delicate bites. It was as chubby as a cartoon cat and incredibly well-behaved.

Luna deftly set out items on the camping table. First came two large platters of neatly sliced fruit: the watermelon was a translucent red, the grapes were plump, and there were mangoes, strawberries, cherries, and mini pineapples. They were so fresh it looked as if they had just been picked from the orchard, practically dripping with juice.

The moment the fruit platters appeared, the complex, refreshing fragrance of the assorted fruits instantly dispersed.

“Damn!”

Someone had just caught a glimpse of the fruit platters, and the exclamation stuck in their throat. Then they saw Luna bring out a dish of Sichuan-style red chili oil king crab. The bright red, glistening oil coated the plump crab meat, and its aroma exploded with a WHOOSH.

Before everyone could recover from the shock, she placed a pot on each side of the table. On one side was a Zaopo vinegar seafood hotpot, and on the other side was a chicken wing, chicken feet, and meat crab casserole. Warmed over low heat on portable butane stoves, the broth simmered with a BUBBLE BUBBLE, forming tiny, dense bubbles as the rich aroma drifted straight into everyone’s noses.

Finally, Luna smilingly served a large pot of cured meat clay pot rice—after all, the few people in her family were all huge eaters.

Immediately after, she placed a frosty bottle of zero-sugar Coke in front of everyone. The bottles were beaded with fine water droplets, looking crisp and refreshing.

The aroma from the table wafted across the entire ninth floor. The savory scent of the meat and crab casserole, the wine-like tang of the Zaopo vinegar, and the refreshing sweetness of the fruit all mixed together. No one could have imagined that in an apocalypse where everyone lived in constant fear for their lives, someone could actually enjoy a meal like this!

Beneath his glasses, Kyle’s eyes instantly widened, and he nearly lost control of his facial expressions.
