Chapter 283: Chapter 283: Could He Have Recognized It Again?
Yun Sheng’s heart skipped a beat. "Logically, Mo Chen shouldn’t have been able to see my face clearly in that dream," she thought. "Why would he say such a thing?"
Forcing down the panic in her chest, she looked at Mo Chen with a surprised expression and gently shook her head. "We probably haven’t met, right? This is my first time at the research institute, and my first time meeting you."
Mo Chen stared quietly at Yun Sheng for several seconds. The girl before him was exceptionally beautiful, with delicate features and a clean, gentle aura that caught the eye at first glance. However, he had never cared about people’s appearances, so he naturally wouldn’t feel anything special just because she was pretty. Rather than these superficial traits, he was far more curious about what was so special about this girl’s spiritual power that Bai Ye would so solemnly entrust him to examine her.
Calmly withdrawing his gaze, Mo Chen said lightly, "Then perhaps I remembered incorrectly. It must have been an illusion."
Standing nearby, Bai Ye heard their entire conversation clearly and shot Mo Chen an impassive glance. If it had been anyone else saying such things to Yun Sheng, he might have suspected they were deliberately hitting on her. But who was Mo Chen? The man was entirely devoted to scientific and spiritual power research. He never liked dealing with people, so it was completely impossible for him to say something so misleading upon their first meeting.
Bai Ye turned his head to look at Yun Sheng again. Her face showed only a trace of surprise and confusion. Her expression was completely open, without the slightest hint of a guilty conscience or deliberate concealment. Even so, he still felt that something was off, sensing a hidden secret he hadn’t yet grasped. However, he was always excellent at maintaining his composure. He revealed nothing on his face, remaining as calm as ever, leaving no clue to his inner thoughts.
At that moment, Mo Chen looked at Yun Sheng and said directly, "Release a little spiritual power first so I can get a preliminary feel for your condition. Afterward, I’ll take you for a comprehensive examination. We won’t know the specific details of your spiritual power until we get the test report. Once we have that, we’ll discuss the next steps."
Hearing this, Yun Sheng subconsciously paused, feeling hesitant. She had originally thought that since Mo Chen couldn’t see her face clearly in the dream, he wouldn’t recognize her during this examination. But his words just now made her a bit uncertain.
"In the dream, my spiritual power spared no effort to entangle Mo Chen," she worried. "If I release my spiritual power right in front of him now, will he recognize me again?!"
"What’s wrong? Is there a problem?" Seeing that Yun Sheng was taking too long to act, Mo Chen frowned, a touch of doubt creeping into his tone.
Yun Sheng quickly shook her head. She knew very well that since she was already here, refusing to do as Mo Chen asked would only arouse more suspicion. The loss would outweigh the gain. Taking a deep breath, she slowly relaxed her mind. Soon, a wisp of spiritual power condensed at her fingertips and floated toward Mo Chen.
The moment this wisp of spiritual power touched Mo Chen’s perception range, his expression drastically changed. His brow furrowed deeper, and his knuckles subconsciously tightened. As the top spiritual power researcher at the institute, he had come into contact with the spiritual power of countless guides. Gentle, thin, sweet—he had seen it all. Yet, there had never been a single time like this, where the other party merely releasing a tiny bit of spiritual power caused his heart to pound wildly.
No, this wasn’t the first time. The unique spiritual power he had encountered in that previous dream flashed through Mo Chen’s mind instantly. It had once recklessly approached him, lingering and entangling his consciousness, forcing him to use all his willpower to restrain himself. It was a sensation he could hardly forget. And now, this was the second time!
Yun Sheng had been quietly observing Mo Chen’s expression the entire time. Seeing his tightly knitted brows and solemn look, her heart leaped into her throat. Forcing herself to remain calm, she asked softly, "Is this enough?"
Pulled back to reality by her voice, Mo Chen suppressed his churning emotions. He stared intently at Yun Sheng, a trace of imperceptible urgency in his tone. "Release a little bit more. Slower. Let me feel it more carefully."
Yun Sheng instinctively wanted to refuse, but meeting Mo Chen’s burning eyes that failed to conceal his curiosity, she swallowed the words back down. Left with no choice, she braced herself and channeled her spiritual power once again.
Wisps of spiritual power swirled around her before slowly approaching Mo Chen. The instant one of the wisps lazily wrapped around his fingertip, Mo Chen’s body abruptly stiffened. That light, soft, warm, and delicate sensation instantly surged through his entire body. It felt as if a feather had gently brushed against the tip of his heart. It was a familiar, fluttering sensation, incredibly similar to... that feeling in the dream!
"That’s enough," Mo Chen quickly pulled his hand back, shooting Yun Sheng an extremely complex look.
His gaze was so profound that it made Yun Sheng’s heartstrings pull even tighter, prompting her to subconsciously avert her eyes.
After a few seconds of silence, Mo Chen barely managed to suppress his surging emotions. He spoke in a flat tone, "Let’s go do the comprehensive examination first. We’ll talk about the specifics once the test data is out."
"Okay," Yun Sheng immediately complied and swiftly withdrew her spiritual power.
"Thank goodness my spiritual power is being obedient this time," she thought in relief. "It isn’t running wild like it did in the dream, otherwise I really would have been exposed!"
"The examination room is this way. Follow me," Mo Chen said as he walked toward the door, his steps steady and devoid of any hesitation.
Yun Sheng hurried to keep up. Bai Ye, who had remained silent all along, followed closely behind them.
The three of them stepped into the elevator together. Mo Chen pressed the button for the twelfth floor. As the elevator started, the cabin fell into a brief silence, broken only by the faint WHIR of the moving machinery.
Stepping out of the elevator, Mo Chen paused and turned his head to look at Bai Ye. "During the examination, Yun Sheng and I will go in. Are you going to wait at the door, or in the lounge at the end of the corridor?"
"I’ll wait for you at the door." Bai Ye couldn’t put his mind at ease regarding Yun Sheng. Guarding the door would allow him to know what was happening inside at the first moment and respond to any emergencies immediately. It was much safer than waiting in the lounge.
Hearing this, Mo Chen simply replied indifferently, "Alright, suit yourself. However, the comprehensive test requires calibrating the equipment and collecting data. It might take a while."
"Mhm, that’s fine." As Bai Ye said this, he gave Yun Sheng a reassuring look.
Feeling slightly relieved, Yun Sheng turned and followed Mo Chen toward the examination room ahead.
With a sudden HISS, the alloy doors slid shut, leaving Bai Ye all alone in the corridor. He stared at the tightly closed doors. His deep black eyes darkened slightly, and the atmospheric pressure around him seemed to drop bit by bit.
The sense of incongruity in his heart grew stronger. When Mo Chen interacted with Yun Sheng just now, he had acted differently than usual, giving Bai Ye a very strange feeling. Yet, as he carefully recalled the scene, he couldn’t put his finger on exactly what was so strange.
"Could they have really met before?" he wondered. "Why didn’t Yun Sheng admit it? And what is she trying to hide?"
