Chapter 284: Chapter 284: If I Don’t Refuse, I’ll Have to Soothe Mo Chen
Inside the examination room, the space appeared much more spacious than it did from the outside. The lighting was soft, and the walls were embedded with various precise detection instruments. A faint blue-white halo circulated over the surface of the equipment.
Mo Chen walked over to the console and rapidly tapped on the panel. Several holographic screens lit up, with data flashing across them at high speed.
"Lie down over there." He lifted his chin toward the examination pod in the corner.
Yun Sheng took a deep breath, walked over to the examination pod, and lay down inside.
The pod’s walls were cool to the touch and contoured to her body’s curves. The scanner overhead moved slowly, emitting a faint hum.
Mo Chen sat down in front of the console, his fingers swiping gently across the panel. Sets of data appeared on the screen.
His eyes narrowed into slits behind his glasses, his gaze darting back and forth between the data and Yun Sheng.
"Your spiritual power..." he began, a rare trace of hesitation in his tone. "It’s much more complex than I imagined."
"What do you mean?"
Mo Chen didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he magnified the data on the screen and pointed to one of the fluctuation graphs.
"This is the baseline waveform of your spiritual power. A normal spiritual power waveform is a smooth, regular curve, but yours is a superposition of multiple waveforms. It looks like several different layers of power intertwined, entangling and influencing each other."
Were several different layers of power intertwined? Did he mean the spiritual power belonging to Bai Ye, Si Jin, and Xing Che that she had absorbed in her dreamscapes?
"If I’m not mistaken, these are all external spiritual powers, aren’t they?" Mo Chen lowered his voice, his expression unusually solemn. "So much spiritual power couldn’t possibly be accumulated from just one or two encounters. You’ve interacted with many Sentinels, and all of them were High-level Sentinels."
Yun Sheng pursed her lips tightly and said nothing.
Mo Chen looked at her and remained silent for a moment before deciding not to press further. He simply said mildly, "It’s fine if you don’t want to tell me. I’m not here to interrogate you. I just need to know what exactly is wrong with your spiritual power and how to fix it."
Yun Sheng breathed a sigh of relief, but her heart remained in her throat.
Mo Chen stood up, retrieved a slender syringe from beside the console, and walked over to the examination pod.
"I need to take a small blood sample from you. Bear with it for a moment, and don’t resist."
Drawing blood wouldn’t hurt much, so did he really need to specifically tell her to bear with it? And what did he mean by "don’t resist"?!
A trace of doubt had just surfaced in Yun Sheng’s mind, but before she could react, the tip of the needle was already pressed against the center of her brow.
"You..."
What kind of blood draw required inserting a needle into the center of the brow? That was the entrance to the spiritual landscape, the most private and vulnerable place for any guide or Sentinel!
No wonder Mo Chen had told her not to resist. If she showed even the slightest bit of resistance, it would be extremely difficult for this needle to pierce her skin.
Mo Chen offered no explanation. He just looked at her expressionlessly, not withdrawing his hand, seemingly waiting for Yun Sheng to compromise.
Under his gaze, Yun Sheng’s scalp prickled. She struggled internally for a few seconds before ultimately complying. At the very least, she could sense that Mo Chen harbored no hostility toward her.
She slowly relaxed her mind, and the tension at the center of her brow gradually faded.
The needle tip pierced her gently. It didn’t hurt, but there was an indescribable, slightly swollen sensation.
A few seconds later, the needle was withdrawn. Mo Chen placed the syringe into a silver container and sealed it, his movements as practiced as if he had done it countless times.
He turned around, adjusted his glasses, and spoke in a voice as flat as if he were reading a lab report. "The sample collection is complete. Next, we need to wait for the test results. Wait on the side for a bit; I still need to examine your spiritual landscape afterward."
Without waiting for Yun Sheng’s reply, Mo Chen turned back to the console and began preparing for the analysis.
Yun Sheng looked at his back, pursed her lips, and slowly sat up in the examination pod. She looked around but didn’t see a single chair to sit on.
He told her to wait on the side, but did he mean for her to just stand there and do nothing? However, Mo Chen was already busy with his tasks, not even sparing her a glance from the corner of his eye.
Yun Sheng had no choice but to walk over to the window and stand there, watching Mo Chen as he lowered his head to place the blood sample into the analyzer. He was extremely focused and meticulous, which made her feel a bit superfluous.
She looked down and opened her terminal, wanting to send Si Jin a message to ask how things were going on his end, only to find that the signal was blocked. Her terminal couldn’t connect to the outside world.
Just as she was swiping somewhat aimlessly on her terminal’s screen out of boredom, Mo Chen’s voice suddenly rang in her ears.
"You’ve provided spiritual guidance for Bai Ye before, haven’t you?"
Yun Sheng jerked her head up and looked across the room, meeting Mo Chen’s probing gaze.
"I’ve conducted many spiritual power tests on him and am very familiar with his spiritual power waveform graph. In your multiple waveforms, one layer completely overlaps with his spiritual power data.
"I’m very curious—how were you able to absorb his spiritual power while providing him with spiritual guidance?"
Yun Sheng’s fingers tightened against the terminal screen. For a moment, she didn’t know how to answer.
Mo Chen looked at her without rushing her; he just waited quietly. Behind his glasses, his eyes held nothing but a pure thirst for knowledge regarding this unknown phenomenon.
"I don’t know what’s going on either..."
Yun Sheng ultimately gave the most honest answer she could. Even now, she didn’t understand the situation with her own spiritual power, and the original book hadn’t mentioned anything about this aspect at all. She wasn’t sure if it was because the original owner of this body had never provided spiritual guidance for High-level Sentinels and thus hadn’t discovered it, or if the original owner simply never possessed such an ability in the first place.
Mo Chen narrowed his eyes. "So you don’t know either... I saw in your file that you don’t have a spiritual body. Logically speaking, a guide without a spiritual body shouldn’t even be able to provide spiritual guidance for a Sentinel, let alone an SSS-level like Bai Ye. Yun Sheng, your spiritual power is exceptionally unique. I have a presumptuous request."
Listening to his increasingly serious tone, Yun Sheng suddenly had a bad feeling.
Sure enough, in the next second, she heard Mo Chen say, "Yun Sheng, could you provide spiritual guidance for me? Of course, I don’t mean anything else by it. I just want to see how you manage to provide spiritual guidance without a spiritual body, and additionally, how you absorb a Sentinel’s spiritual power. This will be very helpful in understanding your true condition."
Yun Sheng’s expression suddenly darkened, her entire body tensing up at his words.
Aside from the special healers at the Tower who followed arrangements to provide regular spiritual guidance for Sentinels returning from contaminated zones with highly unstable spiritual power, under normal circumstances, a Sentinel proactively asking a guide for spiritual guidance was no different from a courtship proposal.
And yet, in Mo Chen’s eyes as he looked at her right now, there was nothing but a pure desire for knowledge and exploration—absolutely none of those messy, romantic intentions.
This man was truly and purely doing this to study her spiritual power.
In a situation like this, should she refuse?
But if she didn’t refuse, she would have to provide spiritual guidance for Mo Chen!
