Doctor Reborn as a Peasant Girl? Time to Get Rich

Chapter 259 - 251: Knocked Unconscious

Chapter 259: Chapter 251: Knocked Unconscious

Working in the fields during the day was a matter of necessity. Once night fell, however, no one dared to risk it. They all locked their doors and went to bed early, waiting for daylight to return to work. At least in the daytime, you could see more clearly and from farther away, giving you a chance to escape if danger arose.

Bai Dazhu was panicking, too. Like Da Bao, he had never been out at night before. He was even starting to get disoriented, wandering in circles through the vast fields, and after a long time, he still hadn’t found Bai Zhi’s potato patch.

He didn’t know exactly where Bai Zhi’s land was, but he knew she was the only one in the entire village growing potatoes. As long as he found a potato patch, it had to be Bai Zhi’s land.

After wandering along the narrow ridges between fields for who knows how long, Bai Dabao suddenly pointed to a distant plot of land and said, "Dad, look! I think that’s the potato patch."

Bai Dazhu followed his son’s finger and saw a plot of land that was indeed very different from the surrounding green wheat fields. Its leaves were large and lush, with stalks growing even taller than the wheat, forming a single, verdant patch.

"That’s it. This is the place." Bai Dazhu was overjoyed and quickly pulled his son along to get to work.

It had rained a few days prior, so the soil was soft. With a single dig of the hoe, they could unearth a big pile of potatoes. They had brought two cloth sacks with them, and it wasn’t long before both were stuffed to the brim.

"Dad, these potatoes are amazing! Every one of them is huge. How long do you think two sacks of these will last us?"

Bai Dazhu grinned from ear to ear. "Who cares how long they last? When we finish them, we’ll just come back for more. From now on, this field is the Bai Family’s personal granary."

Thinking about the setbacks their family had suffered recently, Bai Dabao felt a pang of anxiety. "Dad, if that damned girl Bai Zhi finds out, do you think she’ll let us get away with this?"

Bai Dazhu snorted. "What can she do? They have to catch you with the goods, right? We’ll go back now and hide these potatoes so well she’ll never find them. Then we’ll just deny everything. What can she possibly do to us?"

Seeing his father’s confidence, Bai Dabao felt much more at ease. He smiled. "Dad, let’s hurry back. I’m about to pass out from hunger. We need to get back and have a good meal."

The father and son each shouldered a sack of potatoes and started for home. Halfway there, Bai Dabao heard a strange sound. It was faint, but it entered his ears with perfect clarity.

"Dad, did you hear that?"

Bai Dazhu shook his head. "No? Hear what?"

"There’s a sound," Da Bao said. "I think... it’s coming from behind us." As he spoke, Bai Dabao turned around. The moment he did, he saw a pair of gleaming green eyes and a long, coiling body...

"Dad, it’s a snake! It’s a snake!"

Bai Dazhu bolted. Bai Dabao’s legs turned to jelly, but he didn’t dare hesitate, scrambling desperately after his father. They had only run a few steps when Bai Dazhu slipped and fell hard. Bai Dabao, unable to stop his momentum, crashed right on top of him, sack of potatoes and all.

Though Bai Dabao wasn’t as tall as Bai Dazhu, he was nearly as heavy. The force of his fall, combined with the sack of potatoes, knocked Bai Dazhu out cold. The impact was accompanied by a sharp, crisp CRACK.

Bai Dabao scrambled off Bai Dazhu’s body. He glanced back and, seeing the snake hadn’t followed, felt a small sense of relief. He quickly shook his father. "Dad, get up! The snake is gone! We have to go!"

Bai Dazhu gave no response. The fields fell silent, as if even the chirping of insects had ceased.
