Chapter 260: Chapter 252: Calling for Reinforcements
Bai Dabao panicked and quickly called out a few more times. Seeing his father still unresponsive, he was scared out of his wits. ’Did that fall just now... kill him?’
With a trembling hand, he felt under his father’s nose. He was breathing. ’Thank goodness, thank goodness, he’s still breathing.’
He tried to help his father up, but he was utterly drained of strength and couldn’t possibly lift the unconscious man.
’What should I do? If I stay here to watch over him, what if that venomous snake comes back?’
’I have no idea when Dad will wake up. How could one fall knock him out cold?’
Bai Dabao scrambled to his feet in a panic and said to the unconscious Bai Dazhu, "Dad, you... you just wait here. I’ll... I’ll go back and get help! Just you wait!"
At that moment, Bai Dabao couldn’t have cared less about the yams. He had even abandoned his own father.
He sprinted all the way home. Old Mrs. Bai, who had been dozing in her room, heard the door open and hurried out. Liu was already napping in the living room while waiting for the father and son to return. Hearing the commotion, she rushed to the door. "You’re back?" She smiled at the newcomer, but then she saw it was just her son, and he was empty-handed. "Why are you back empty-handed? Where’s your father?" Liu asked.
Just then, Old Mrs. Bai came over as well. Seeing Bai Dabao’s empty hands, she immediately frowned. "Don’t tell me you two couldn’t even find her land?"
Bai Dabao quickly waved his hands. "No, no! We’d already filled two sacks with yams and were halfway home. But then—we ran into a venomous snake."
Liu’s legs went weak with fright, and she nearly collapsed. Fortunately, Old Mrs. Bai, who was beside her, caught her. With a grim expression, Old Mrs. Bai demanded, "What exactly happened? Explain yourself. Why didn’t your father come back?"
Bai Dabao explained everything. When the two women heard that Bai Dazhu was still alive, they finally breathed a sigh of relief.
Old Mrs. Bai rushed to bang on Erzhu’s door. "Erzhu, get out here! It’s an emergency!"
Bai Erzhu was sound asleep and became very annoyed at his mother’s shouting. "Can’t it wait until tomorrow?"
Old Mrs. Bai retorted, "You heartless boy! Get out here now! Your older brother is on the verge of death!"
All of Bai Erzhu’s drowsiness vanished in an instant. He scrambled out of bed without even taking the time to get dressed and flung open the door. "Mother, what’s wrong? What happened to Big Brother?" They were brothers, after all. As the saying goes, blood is thicker than water. If his brother was truly in mortal danger, he couldn’t possibly stand by and do nothing.
Old Mrs. Bai said, "Your older brother fell on the way home. He’s lying unconscious on a path between the fields, and there are venomous snakes in the area. Hurry up and carry him back."
Ms. Zhang came out, throwing on a robe, and asked doubtfully, "Didn’t Big Brother go with Da Bao? How is it that Da Bao is back, but he isn’t?"
Liu quickly interjected, "Da Bao was terrified! He was too weak to move your big brother. Stop wasting time with questions and just go! If you’re late and something else happens, what are we going to do?"
Although Bai Erzhu and his wife were reluctant, they knew they couldn’t refuse to help in a situation like this.
Ms. Zhang handed Bai Erzhu his clothes. "Hurry up and get dressed. Be careful on the way."
Bai Erzhu put on his clothes as she spoke. Just as he was dressed and ready to leave, he noticed Bai Dabao sitting motionless in the living room, showing no sign of joining him.
"Da Bao, what are you waiting for? Let’s go!" Bai Erzhu said.
Bai Dabao was taken aback. "Me? You want me to go back?" he asked, his face a mask of panic. The memory of those gleaming green eyes still filled him with terror.
