Chapter 4624: More Than One

Chapter 4624: More Than One

This combat god’s strongest memories were of the battlefield.

It had come very close to death multiple times on the battlefield. As for who its enemy was, it did not know because there were too many of them. It had fought against all kinds of civilizations and all kinds of lifeforms. The combat gods were little more than tools. No one told them where their enemies came from or what their purpose was. They were simply sent to the battlefield, and all they had to do was kill those before them.

Every combat god longed to leave the battlefield by earning sufficient military merit.

This was actually rather similar to the Perennial World’s rear battlefield back on the Fifth Mainland.

The battle that had left the deepest impression on the creature that Lu Yin was Possessing had involved an Immortal being. An Immortal had fallen while heavily injured, and it had happened to land very close to the creature. When that happened, the internal conflict that it faced had become the most unforgettable moment of its life. It had wanted to kill that Immortal and earn tremendous military merit, but it had also been afraid of being killed by that Immortal.

But that moment of hesitation was enough for the Immortal to leave without so much as glancing at the creature even once.

It had been relieved that it had not attacked, as it would have certainly died.

Lu Yin withdrew from the Possession. A combat god, a powerful Dukkhan, had lived for a very long time. He could not see everything in its memories, and so he could only search for key details.

He continued to Possess various creatures.

He tapped a finger to roll the die.

It was too wonderful a feeling. There was no longer any limit on how many times he could roll the die. No matter how miserable his luck might be, he would eventually roll the result that he sought.

Six pips.

As he looked at the various orbs of light, there was not much point in being picky; they were all dim.

Lu Yin casually chose one and merged into it.

When he opened his eyes, he saw a dark and smooth rock wall and was immediately assaulted by the pungent smell of blood. This rock wall was bloodstained. He was on another battlefield.

Lu Yin had Possessed a combat god on the battlefield, and memories started to surge in.

The ground shook, as if some enormous creature was approaching.

This combat god was evading pursuit. It had encountered a powerful enemy on the battlefield, a gigantic creature with numerous tentacles. That was what was currently searching for the combat god.

In the creature’s memories, Lu Yin saw one battle after another, almost all of which involved hiding from pursuers. This combat god had extremely poor combat strength. It had only barely comprehended River through a flash of insight. It had thought that it would obtain generous cultivation resources, and while it had indeed received those resources, it had also been sent to the battlefield.

Those resources had not meant much.

Withdrawing from the Possession, he continued rolling the die.

Lu Yin rolled the die again and again. He continuously Possessed various combat gods, and three times in a row, he Possessed ones on the battlefield.

Many of the combat gods who had cultivated River were on that battlefield. This was a path that all of them had to take.

It was essentially an elimination. Those who survived were allowed to leave, while those who died simply died.

In addition to the combat gods, there were far more Progenitor-level cultivators on the battlefield, as well as Semi-Progenitors and even lower leveled cultivators. On this battlefield, the combat gods could be considered experts, even though they lacked the ability to protect themselves.

Whether they had cultivated River, Return, Void, or even Origin, they were all considered combat gods. However, because of their cultivation realms, they were divided into River Realm gods, Return Realm gods, Void Realm gods, and Origin Realm gods.

River Realm gods were the ones that Lu Yin had repeatedly Possessed. They were inferior to those above them and superior to all below them. The lucky ones would be allowed to leave the battlefield and become the subordinates of various powerhouses. Those with connections could be transferred into the Divine Palace itself, where they could enjoy life forever as long as they did not seek death.

Return Realm gods could be granted a territory. Of course, every once in a while, they were required to turn in a reset megaverse, as well as a tribute of time.

The Lousai race’s offerings of time were also collected by the various gods that served a territory, rather than directly sent to the River of Aeons’ main stream.

Lu Yin had only learned these details after Possessing enlightenment gods.

The River of Aeons that harvested time from creatures was only a branch, but to Lu Yin, it felt far larger than the branches within ordinary megaverses.

This branch stream of the River of Aeons flowed through an entire region, which meant that this area encompassed far more than a single megaverse.

Generally speaking, Return Realm gods were almost all peak Dukkhans. If they went a step further and comprehended the power of Void to become Void Realm gods, then they could receive custody of a territory and take a divine envoy as their master. Even within the Divine Palace, such combat gods stood among the upper ranks.

The highest level of combat gods were Origin Realm gods. They stood at the peak of the combat gods and even had a special ranking list within the Divine Palace: the Divine Palace Sequences.

Sequence referred to order. This ranking of the combat gods signified the order in which they were waiting for the Divine Palace to arrange for them to attempt to break through to the Immortal realm. They truly were being placed in sequence.

Those Dukkhans had left behind their own territories as well as the battlefield. They could enter or leave the Divine Palace at will, and they did not even need to submit tribute. It could be said that they were the freest creatures in the Divine Palace. Their only mission was to find a way to break through to the Immortal realm, nothing more.

The highest goal of the few combat gods that Lu Yin had Possessed was to become Origin Realm gods. However, that was a rather distant goal. At the moment, the Divine Palace did not have very many Origin Realm gods.

The further one progressed, the harder it became to comprehend the power.

As Lu Yin thought about this, he continued rolling the die. Hmm? This one is interesting.

This time, he had Possessed a combat god named Lü. Like other combat gods, the creature had comprehended River, obtained a number of cultivation resources, and then been sent to the battlefield, where it fought. By relying on a bit of luck and a bit of scheming, it had succeeded in leaving the battlefield. Moreover, because it had become acquainted with a combat god named Yan Zhong on the battlefield, after leaving, Lü had taken advantage of that connection and attached itself to Yan Zhong’s father, Yan Gong. Yan Gong was a Void Realm god with a Divine Envoy as his master, which granted him some level of status within the Divine Palace.

Not long after Yan Zhong left the battlefield, he had comprehended the power of Return and been granted a territory.

Lü had followed Yan Zhong, completing the task of resetting megaverses on Yan Zhong’s behalf.

What was interesting to Lu Yin was that Lü was a traitor. It was actually loyal to another combat god who was Yan Gong’s rival, Gong Xia. That combat god had made arrangements long ago for Lü to approach Yan Zhong on the battlefield, with the goal of using Yan Zhong to scheme against Yan Gong.

Only Gong Xia and Lü were aware of this matter. No one else knew.

Well, now there was one more individual: Lu Yin.

He continued to examine Lü’s memories, but the rest were of little value. Only this one matter was rather interesting.

Lu Yin felt that it might be possible to use this matter to reach Yan Gong and then use Yan Gong as a cover to enter the Divine Palace.

After that, he would naturally obtain the cultivation methods for Return and Void as well.

Unfortunately, if he could simply capture a Return Realm god or a Void Realm god, there would be no need to go through so much trouble.

The current problem was how to find Lü. The Divine Palace simply encompassed too vast a region. Finding the territory that Yan Zhong had been granted would not be easy.

It might be possible to see the territory with the Mirrorlight Art, but Lu Yin did not even know which territory belonged to Yan Zhong.

He continued rolling his die, Possessing combat gods again and again. In this manner, several months later, Lu Yin found it.

In the memories of a combat god, he saw the Lousai race, which confirmed that this combat god was near their location. It just so happened that this combat god also knew Lü, which meant that, through it, Lu Yin could find Yan Zhong’s territory.

Not only that, but Lu Yin could also use this creature to find the Return Realm god that it answered to.

Lu Yin teleported back to the Lousai race, from where he determined the combat god’s location.

His eyes were suddenly drawn over to a specific place. There were traces of the power of time there, and not ordinary traces either. It appeared that the Divine Palace had taken the initiative to reach out to that place.

Immortals were beings that even the Divine Palace had to pay attention to.

Following what he had learned from the combat god’s memories, Lu Yin peered across the cosmos from the Lousai race’s location, searching for the combat god.

That creature was under the command of this territory’s Return Realm god, and it took him some time to find it. He teleported behind the combat god and resumed examining its memories. Once finished, he quickly looked elsewhere and vanished.

Above the earth, the wind blew in one direction, and then another, constantly going back and forth.

A small, thin green creature stood among grass that rose taller than itself, facing the wind as it watched. Every so often, it would glance behind itself, as if considering where the wind was going.

Teleportation abruptly brought Lu Yin beside the green creature, and his awareness entered his divine energy clone.

When the small green creature saw Lu Yin suddenly appear, it attacked out of reflex, but Lu Yin easily caught the creature and casually pressed it to the ground.

It was a peak Dukkhan who had cultivated Return and oversaw a territory, but so what? In Lu Yin’s eyes, this creature was not even comparable to the peak Dukkhans of the Nine Odysseys Megaverse. Forget comparing it to an expert like Xiao Zhu, but even an ordinary peak Dukkhan could easily suppress this creature.

“Who are you?” the small green creature asked in terror. From the moment that Lu Yin had appeared, it had known that its situation was bad, but it had not expected to be unable to even fight back.

Lu Yin held the creature’s neck and squeezed a little.

Overcome with intense pain, the small green creature wailed, “Spar- spare my life!”

“How is the power of Return cultivated?”

“Coming and going form return. Every power that has a source also has a destination. If one can clearly see where it comes from and where it goes, one can cultivate the power of Return...”

Lu Yin listened quietly. The more he heard, the more he felt that this power closely resembled karma. It seemed that the Immortal who had developed the power of Return might have also comprehended karma.

Return was like a stepping stone to comprehending karma. Unfortunately, trying to use this power to knock on the door of karma was no different from knocking with a feather. It was impossible to even produce a sound. Lu Yin could see this because he had already comprehended karma.

A gust of wind blew past, coming from one direction and going toward another.

Lu Yin raised his hand. In his palm, a familiar power appeared before the eyes of the small green creature, which only further horrified it. “Re- Return?”

How could he learn it so fast?

This unknown creature was not a part of the Divine Palace as it wanted to cultivate the power of Return and join the Divine Palace. Clearly, it had not cultivated this power before.

In other words, from just what the green creature had shared, this being had already mastered the power of Return. Just what level of powerhouse was this?

“Honored—” But before the small green lifeform could finish speaking, Lu Yin eliminated it. Mercy? That did not exist. That was simply the way of the cosmos. That creature had destroyed no small number of civilizations itself.

Having learned how to cultivate Return, there was no need for Lu Yin to learn it through Yan Zhong. Lu Yin was not in a hurry to find Yan Zhong, and he instead resumed rolling the die.

It might be possible to learn the power of Void through the combat gods that he Possessed with the power of Return. Should that happen, Lu Yin would not even need to look for Yan Gong. No, that was not quite right. He still needed to find that creature, as a guide was necessary. Without one, rashly entering the Divine Palace would draw attention.

Return Realm gods were no longer considered ordinary combat gods. Lu Yin Possessed one and finally saw the Divine Palace for the first time.

It was both magnificent and enormous. It was also filled with the gray of the power of time, and it appeared solemn and imposing.

In the memories of the Return Realm god, Lu Yin saw several of the Divine Palace’s divine envoys, all of whom were Immortals. He saw the competition within the Divine Palace, as well as a higher level battlefield.

Even there, there were all kinds of civilizations participating.

Still, Lu Yin could not learn the reason for the war. The combat gods above the River Realm merely possessed slightly greater knowledge of the Divine Palace.

Lu Yin continued rolling the die, Possessing more creatures again and again.

Gradually, he came to understand more about the Divine Palace. One of the Return Realm gods that he Possessed had been lucky enough to accidentally overhear a secret. There was more than one Divine Palace, and the enemies faced on the battlefield might be from those other Divine Palaces.
