Chapter 3798: High Elder Shatter Peak
The atmosphere in the hall had already become strange long before the final recruit remained standing. One after another, the top ten recruits were claimed.
The Rank Four recruits disappeared first, each eventually accepting an elder after lengthy discussions and negotiations. Some elders departed looking satisfied while others looked as if they had just suffered a financial catastrophe.
The Rank Three recruits followed soon after.
Both possessed enough talent that competition had been fierce, yet eventually they too selected their future masters.
The sword carrying young woman joined an elder from the Heavenly Edge Sword Division while the scholarly youth accepted an elder from the Strategic Records Pavilion, a division famous for producing advisors, tacticians, and administrators for the sect.
That left only three people: Little Bull, Lushi Tangmen and the butterfly bloodline genius.
The butterfly bloodline genius proved surprisingly easy.
Several elders from the Beast Division and Bloodline Research Division fought over him for nearly half an hour before an elderly woman with silver hair finally won him over by promising access to a special bloodline cultivation ground.
The androgynous youth practically floated away behind her while looking pleased with himself.
Then came Lushi Tangmen and unlike the others, his outcome had already been decided long ago. The moment the discussions began, a distinguished middle aged man calmly stepped forward.
The elder wore dark blue robes covered in countless golden symbols and each symbol glowed faintly as if alive. Merely looking at them made several recruits feel dizzy.
The man carried no weapon, nor did he radiate any oppressive aura. Yet the moment he appeared, many elders immediately backed away.
"High Elder An Kyo." Several voices sounded respectfully.
Lin Mu observed him carefully. This was his first time seeing one of the sect’s true high ranking elders. And unlike the others, this man possessed a certain calm authority. The kind that came from standing near the peak for a very long time.
Tangmen immediately bowed. "Master."
The elder nodded.
It was a simple gesture, yet it revealed everything. The relationship had already been decided, making several elders sigh. Others clicked their tongues in annoyance and one particularly grumpy elder muttered that recruiting talents from one’s own clan should be prohibited.
High Elder An Kyo merely glanced at him. "Then perhaps next time your clan should produce someone worth recruiting."
The hall instantly burst into laughter as the grumpy elder’s face darkened while the others openly mocked him. Tangmen meanwhile stepped behind An Kyo without hesitation. Lin Mu found the entire situation somewhat interesting.
He had originally expected Tangmen to belong to some combat oriented division. Instead the young man had entered under a Talisman High Elder. Though after thinking about it further, it made sense.
The strongest talisman cultivators were terrifying existences. Talismans contained formations, and Formations controlled heaven and earth. Someone who truly mastered that path could destroy armies without lifting a finger.
The Heavenly Stream Guardian Sect was large enough that it maintained separate divisions for both. Most sects combined Talismans and Formations under one banner as there simply were not enough specialists to justify separating them.
This sect was different as its scale allowed specialization to become its own strength. Soon Tangmen departed with High Elder An Kyo and then only one recruit remained: Little Bull.
The hall became quiet, very quiet. More than fifty elders sat scattered throughout the room. Some stared directly at him, others pretended to examine jade slips, and a few looked toward the ceiling while several glared openly at competing elders.
The tension had become so thick that even ordinary disciples could feel it.
Little Bull scratched his head. "Why’s everyone looking at me?"
No one answered and the silence somehow became even more awkward. Lin Mu internally found the situation amusing. These elders had spent hours fighting over recruits. Yet now none of them dared make the first move.
Everyone knew what would happen.
The moment one elder approached Little Bull, chaos would erupt. And apparently nobody wanted to be blamed for starting the second war of the day.
Just as Lin Mu was wondering who would finally break the stalemate though...
BANG!
The doors exploded open.
The sound echoed through the entire hall as several recruits nearly jumped. Even some elders visibly flinched and everyone turned toward the entrance.
Heavy footsteps followed.
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
Each step sounded like a giant hammer striking the floor.
Then the owner finally appeared and Lin Mu immediately focused on the newcomer. The man was enormous, not merely tall but almost gigantic.
He stood at least two and a half meters tall and possessed shoulders so broad that the doorway seemed too small for him. His muscles bulged beneath robes that appeared one size too small.
Or perhaps two sizes too small.
Veins like steel cables ran across his arms. His neck was thicker than many cultivators’ waists and strange metallic bands wrapped around parts of his body; his wrists, his forearms, his chest and even his neck.
Lin Mu immediately sensed that they were related to a body cultivation technique.
’Restraints or seals? Perhaps training tools?’ Lin Mu wondered what they were, as he couldn’t exactly check with his immortal sense right now.
But whatever they were, they felt dangerous.
Then the room reacted as several elders inhaled sharply. Others immediately straightened their backs and one elderly body cultivation elder actually looked like he wanted to run away.
"High Elder Shatter Peak?!" The words escaped multiple mouths simultaneously.
The giant stopped in the center of the room as his gaze slowly swept across the gathering. The pressure he emitted contained no cultivation, no spiritual force or even immortal qi, yet dozens of elders suddenly looked uncomfortable.
It felt like being stared at by an angry mountain.
Lin Mu became intrigued and even Elder He Jian looked shocked.
"When did he come out of seclusion?" the old recruiter muttered.
The giant folded his arms and the action alone caused several muscles to bulge alarmingly.
Then he spoke, his voice sounding like rolling thunder. "So."
Silence filled the hall.
The giant’s eyes narrowed. "So none of you cowards thought it necessary to inform me?"
