Chapter 4899: Stupefied
“Yes!” Though wounded, the two youths were eager to prove themselves before him. At his command, they immediately dashed into the woods.
Xiao Junheng paused, glancing at the little girl seated beside Xiao Junyan before turning back to him. “You didn’t bring them along just so they could do these things, did you?” he asked, slightly surprised.
“What else?” Xiao Junyan asked indifferently.
He stated it with such matter-of-factness that Xiao Junheng found himself at a loss for words, merely fixing a deep gaze upon him and the little girl.
He knew in his heart that Xiao Junyan held this little girl in high regard.
Yet, over all these years, he had never shown such devotion to anyone. To see him so preoccupied with a mere little girl now was truly unexpected.
“Thirsty? Want some water?” Xiao Junyan’s attention was entirely focused on the chubby little girl pouting beside him. Seeing her puffed-up expression, he couldn’t help but reach out and poke her little cheek.
Yue’er was sulking! Her dagger had been confiscated, and this man kept staring at her, holding her tight so she couldn’t escape. Now, seeing him reach out to poke her cheek playfully, she immediately turned her face and opened her mouth to bite his finger.
“Little brat,” Xiao Junyan chuckled softly, withdrawing his hand and instead gently flicking her forehead.
“I’m not a little brat!” Yue’er snorted softly. Having failed to bite his finger and instead received a flick on her forehead, she rubbed her forehead with one hand and turned her head away, refusing to acknowledge him.
“Have some water.” Xiao Junyan handed her the water sac he was holding.
“No.” Yue’er didn’t take it, crossing her arms and curling up.
“How about some fruit? “As if by magic, he produced more fruit—wild berries clearly picked from the forest.
“No.” Yue’er replied without even glancing at them.
Seeing her refusal, he passed the berries to Xiao Junheng beside him. Then, retrieving two crimson eggs from his spatial pouch, he held them before her. “How about these?”
Yue’er blinked at the eggs, curiosity sparking in her eyes. “What are these?”
Seeing her interest, Xiao Junyan’s lips curved into a faint smile, a trace of amusement flickering in his eyes. “These are Firebird eggs. They’re incredibly nourishing.” He placed the two crimson eggs in her hands. “Eat them.”
Xiao Junheng, standing nearby, was utterly dumbfounded. Suddenly, he felt as though he didn’t recognize this Xiao Junyan beside him. Was he truly Xiao Junyan? Was he really not someone else impersonating him?
Yue’er looked at the two red eggs in her hands, still slightly warm. Curious, she asked, “Can I eat them like this? Do I need to cook them?”
“Firebird spirit beast eggs can be eaten raw. Not only are they nourishing for the body, but they’re also exceptionally restorative—a rare treasure indeed,” Xiao Junheng explained, glancing at Xiao Junyan. He couldn’t fathom why his cousin was being so kind to this young girl from a collateral branch of the family.
What stunned him even more was when Xiao Junyan actually took an egg from the little girl’s hand, saying, “Let me peel it for you.” He carefully peeled the egg before handing it to her to eat.
Watching the chubby little girl puff out her cheeks like a squirrel as she ate the firebird egg, Xiao Junyan felt an oddly satisfying warmth rise within him. Seeing her eat with such delight brought him unexpected pleasure.
Meanwhile, the two had lit a fire and prepared the game, placing it on the grill. Just then, Xiao Junheng approached them, his expression blank and dazed.
