Chapter 1325: I WANT THE TRUTH
ONCE the car came to a stop in front of the Bai family mansion's gate, Shen Ji Yun got out first. He walked around to the passenger side, opened the door, and Luo Yan stepped out.
"Brother Ji Yun, I told you, you didn't have to get out," Luo Yan said helplessly.
"And you know I wouldn't just drive off the moment you stepped out," Shen Ji Yun said. "So I might as well get out and watch you go inside."
"Or..." Luo Yan said, playing with Shen Ji Yun's fingers. "You just want an excuse to spend more time with me."
Shen Ji Yun smiled. "I won't deny that."
Luo Yan glanced around. The lamp posts gave off enough light, but there probably wouldn't be anyone passing by at this hour. His uncle and aunt were likely already asleep. No one would be around to see them. So he wrapped his arms around Shen Ji Yun's waist and leaned against his chest.
"Brother Ji Yun, come to the party early tomorrow," he said. "That way I can give you your gift and you can wear it."
"Okay."
Luo Yan tilted his head up. "Good night, Brother Ji Yun."
Shen Ji Yun looked down at Luo Yan. Even in the dim light, he could see how beautiful his face was. He raised his hands and cupped Luo Yan's cheeks. He leaned in, meaning to give him a quick kiss. But then a strong hand grabbed him by the arm and yanked him away from Luo Yan. The pull caught him off guard. He couldn't brace himself in time and nearly stumbled backward.
"What do you think you're doing?"
Hearing that familiar voice, Shen Ji Yun's entire body went rigid. No. No way. He couldn't be that unlucky. There was no way the one person who absolutely should not see them like this had caught them. But when he turned his head and saw Uncle Wei Tian standing there, his face dark with anger, Shen Ji Yun felt his stomach drop. This was bad. This was really, really bad. His mind went blank. He couldn't think. He couldn't move. All he could do was stand there, frozen, while his heart pounded so hard he was sure everyone here could hear it.
The anger on Uncle Wei Tian's face flickered. He stared at Shen Ji Yun, and his expression shifted. His brow furrowed. His mouth opened slightly. It was like he was seeing him for the first time. The hard line of his jaw loosened, replaced by something else. Shock. Confusion. He blinked once, twice, as if trying to make sense of what he was seeing.
"Ji Yun?" Uncle Wei Tian asked, looking like he wanted Shen Ji Yun to say 'no'. But how could Shen Ji Yun say he wasn't himself? Even though he was tempted to pretend he wasn't, he knew he had to face this.
"U-Uncle Wei Tian," Shen Ji Yun answered, the words barely coming out of his mouth.
Uncle Wei Tian's confusion and shock slowly gave way to anger once again. He looked at Shen Ji Yun, then at Luo Yan, then back at Shen Ji Yun again. Each time his gaze shifted, the anger on his face grew more obvious. His jaw tightened. His eyes narrowed. He didn't say a word, but his expression said plenty.
Shen Ji Yun braced himself for Uncle Wei Tian to explode. But before anything could happen, Luo Yan stepped forward and planted himself right in front of his father.
"Dad, please calm down," Luo Yan said. "Whatever questions you have, we'll answer them inside."
Uncle Wei Tian stared at Luo Yan for a long moment. Then he seemed to push his anger down, stuffing it away somewhere out of sight. He turned and walked toward the gate. "Get inside. Both of you."
Luo Yan let out a quiet breath as he watched his father disappear through the gate. His legs felt weak. His hands were icy. For a moment back there, when he saw his father's face, he had been sure something terrible was about to happen. His heart had nearly stopped. And his father really just had to see them at the worst possible moment too, right when Shen Ji Yun was about to kiss him. He pressed a hand to his chest, trying to steady himself.
Thankfully, he had been able to calm his father down and keep his anger in check. If he hadn't stepped in when he did, he was afraid his father might have actually thrown a punch at Shen Ji Yun.
Luo Yan glanced at his boyfriend. Shen Ji Yun stood completely still, frozen in place. A pang of sympathy went through Luo Yan. He couldn't imagine what was going through his head right now. But he knew Shen Ji Yun was scared and worried, because that was exactly how Luo Yan felt. If anything, Shen Ji Yun was probably feeling it even more.
As if to prove that, Shen Ji Yun turned to him. His blue eyes were wide, his face pale under the dim light. He looked at Luo Yan like he was searching for something, some kind of reassurance, some sign that this wasn't as bad as it seemed. Luo Yan reached out and took his hand, squeezing it once.
"Come on. Let's go inside," he said quietly. "It's going to be alright."
At least, he hoped so.
***
Luo Yan sat inside his uncle's study. He was on one end of a long couch, and Shen Ji Yun sat at the other end. They had tried to sit closer together at first, but his father shot them a sharp look, so they moved apart. Now his father paced back and forth in front of them. Anger radiated off him in waves.
"When did this start?" his father finally asked after a long, heavy silence. He stopped pacing and looked at both of them. "And don't try to lie or tell me that what I saw was some kind of new greeting young people do these days. I want the truth." He swallowed hard, his jaw clenching. "Just be honest with me."
