Chapter 3392: Demon Record (15)
Ning Shu had truly experienced the soul-rattling sensation of scraping bone to purge venom.
She leaned against the wall, looking half dead.
Even so, the snake king didn’t dare lower his guard. The barrier still couldn’t be broken, and for now, he still had to deal with this person. That half-dead state might be an act—deliberate misdirection.
Demons were notoriously cunning creatures, especially ones that had lived for hundreds of years. Time alone was enough to hone their intelligence.
That was why the snake king took the initiative to talk about the Special Investigation Bureau that was pursuing him.
Ning Shu was skeptical about what he said. In a world where humans and demons coexisted, the existence of the Special Investigation Bureau clearly wasn’t going to be aboveboard. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have been founded in secret. Among humans, the Special Investigation Bureau barely seemed to exist. Most people didn’t even know such an organization was around. But among demons, its name carried thunderous weight.
An Yujun lay unconscious in the snake king’s arms. She was out cold. Her face had taken on a bluish tinge.
The snake king was getting anxious. If they didn’t leave soon, the Special Investigation Bureau would arrive first.
“At the end of the day, we’re both demons,” he said with a frown on his face. “If we fight to the death and the Special Investigation Bureau shows up, the two of us will be wiped out together.”
Ning Shu’s face was pale. She smiled faintly. “Trading my life for your family of four? I’d say that’s a profit.”
The snake king’s eyebrows knotted tightly. “Do you really want to die with me? What do you gain from that? Once you’re taken by the Special Investigation Bureau, you’ll face a fate worse than death.”
Ning Shu pushed herself upright against the wall. “Who doesn’t value their life? I’m just pissed. If I were a little weaker, you’d have killed me already. Now that I can trap you, you want to negotiate. You look pretty pathetic, Snake King.”
Nevermind gratitude for saving lives—he’d attacked without caring about right or wrong.
Fine. He was strong. So what?
There was always someone stronger than him.
If the other party had been weak, killing them would’ve been the end of it, but if he ran into someone stronger, he’d have kicked an iron plate.
‘One move,’ ‘instant kill’—that must’ve sounded impressive.
Survival of the fittest was the rule of the world, but by that logic, even if she’d taken An Yujun’s and the two little snakes’ lives, there’d be nothing wrong with it. They were weak—that was their problem.
Yuan Liang’s death would’ve been deserved too.
Though Yuan Liang himself probably felt pretty wronged.
In the end, it all came down to strength.
Wasn’t the snake king now bluffing his way through negotiations?
There had to be something on him the Special Investigation Bureau wanted.
Ning Shu released her spiritual consciousness and scanned the snake king to see what he was carrying.
His vertical pupils locked onto her. He felt something sweep over his body.
But Ning Shu didn’t detect anything unusual.
Had she guessed wrong?
The two of them faced off.
Ning Shu casually circulated the tiny remnant of spiritual energy in her dantian to heal herself.
Her wounds hurt like hell.
The snake king was so pathetic. He couldn’t even neutralize his own venom.
There was no way she was letting this go. He’d nearly crippled her and wrecked her home, and now he wanted to just walk away?
She’d saved his wife and kids and gotten nothing in return.
The snake king stared at Ning Shu darkly. His lower body transformed into snake form as he hovered in midair.
“I’ve tried reasoning with you. You won’t listen. Don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
He opened his mouth and spat out a smooth, round bead. It looked like a massive pearl, yet also like polished jade.
The moment the bead appeared, the space in the room began to warp slightly. Even Ning Shu’s water-barrier formation started to tremble.
Her heart jumped. What was this thing? It was terrifyingly powerful.
The bead spun in the air. The barrier was on the verge of collapse.
With a loud bang, the water curtain shattered into droplets that pattered down like rain.
Her barrier was broken.
Ning Shu pointed a finger. The water that had fallen to the floor reversed course, rose back up like a rewind, and gathered again to form a new barrier.
There was no shortage of water in this world.
THey were perfect for recycling.
He could break the barrier, and she could just rebuild it. She ought to thank him for helping her get more proficient with the ordinance of water.
In fact, she ought to thank his whole family!
The snake king’s expression turned ugly. Unable to hold back, he said, “Is there something wrong with your head, Eagle? I’ve talked myself hoarse—was it all a waste?”
He was genuinely surprised that Ning Shu could raise a barrier with just a lift of her hand. A demon like this couldn’t some nobody in the demon world.
He even began to regret attacking so early. Maybe this was a great demon bored of the demon realm, who’d come to live among humans.
Ning Shu said calmly, “A person lives for pride. You stormed into my home, tried to murder me, without even giving me a chance to argue. Where am I supposed to put my face? If you want to show off, fine—but you can’t just wipe me out like that.”
She hated that kind of show-off the most, especially when it involved using other people’s lives as props.
If she’d actually done something wrong, fine. If real harm had been done, so be it. But killing for no reason?
If he was so impressive, he might as well go fight the heavens, then!
The bead vibrated slightly, distorting the space around it.
Ning Shu’s water barrier shattered again. Rain drizzled down.
She smiled faintly and pointed.
The droplets on the floor gathered once more, forming another water barrier.
Hmm. She really was getting better at this.
The snake king’s face darkened completely. His vertical pupils fixed on her as he threatened, “Do you really want to oppose me? Don’t forget—I am the snake king. All snakes in the world obey my command.”
Ning Shu’s fingers transformed into claws. With a smile on her face, she said, “I specialize in catching snakes.”
After all, she was an eagle.
The snake king couldn’t help but curse under his breath. Damn idiot!
He’d run into a stubborn idiot who wasn’t weak and was infuriatingly hard to deal with.
Soft tactics didn’t work. Hard tactics didn’t work either.
Ning Shu stared at the faintly trembling bead. What was this thing? It might be some kind of treasure.
She reached out, trying to snatch it—especially since it was radiating powerful demonic energy.
The snake king saw her focus on the demon king core and immediately opened his mouth wide to swallow it.
Ning Shu smacked her lips. Some snake king he was. What an ugly way to eat.
Without the demon king core’s help, it became even more impossible to really break Ning Shu’s barrier. Even if he forced it open, it would just be repaired again.
This was enough to drive anyone mad.
Ning Shu flexed her eagle claws. “Let me tear you open and dig that bead out. I want to see what it actually is.”
The snake king lashed his tail to attack her.
Ning Shu pointed a finger, and a water barrier wrapped around him.
The snake king gave a dark laugh. “Blind Eagle, don’t think I’m really afraid of you.”
As soon as he finished speaking, a terrifying surge of demonic energy erupted from his body. His eyes turned blood-red, and winds howled around him like a hurricane.
Ning Shu’s water barrier popped like a soap bubble.
She narrowed her eyes.
So the snake king actually still had another trick up his sleeve.
