Chapter 3432: Combustion (21)
Personal grudges meant nothing in the face of national honor. Besides, Wu Xianrou was the daughter of Political Commissar Wu. Whether for public or private reasons, ensuring Wu Xianrou’s safe return was the right thing to do.
Zhu Yi had pushed her out. It wasn’t to compete with this young woman over a man.
Some people’s willfulness was backed by privilege.
She was coddled by her family from the moment she was married, and once married, pampered by her husband. She lived a perfect life without having to lift a finger.
While dodging bullets and reloading, Ning Shu caught a hand signal from Song Yi. She nodded, understanding what he meant.
There was a bomb on this plane. They had to deal with these people quickly.
Ning Shu shot and killed one of the hijackers, leapt out of the cabin, and dragged Wu Xianrou—who was clutching her ankle—into a run.
She shoved Wu Xianrou into the hands of the police, then turned back to support Song Yi.
“She’s with the police now. We’re pulling out. There’s a bomb on the plane.”
The police had already evacuated the airport passengers, and those in the cabin were scrambling to flee as well. Ning Shu and Song Yi did their best to hold off the hijackers, giving the others a chance to escape.
Step by step, Ning Shu and Song Yi retreated, backing out of the cabin.
With police reinforcements on site, things became easier for the two of them.
Song Yi let out a long breath and glanced over at Wu Xianrou, who was sitting off to the side looking completely lost. He quickly walked over.
The moment Wu Xianrou saw Song Yi, she threw herself into his arms and began to cry.
Ning Shu watched silently from a short distance, then contacted Little Nine and Old Six to report that Wu Xianrou had been successfully rescued, and there was no need to send a helicopter or backup.
Little Nine responded with a brief, “Copy that.”
After a moment, Ning Shu walked over and said, “We should go.”
“Stop crying, let’s get moving,” Song Yi said as he patted Wu Xianrou’s back. Wu Xianrou, with tears still on her cheeks, gave him a smile. “Mm, let’s go.”
Her hair was stuck to her face, and that smile made her look heartbreakingly fragile. Song Yi pressed his lips together, then reached out to brush the hair off her face.
Ning Shu: …
Wu Xianrou had twisted her ankle, and it was swollen to the point that walking was out of the question. Song Yi ended up carrying her out of the airport.
The three of them got into a jeep. Ning Shu sensibly took the driver’s seat, while Song Yi and Wu Xianrou sat in the back.
“Thank you for coming to save me,” Wu Xianrou said to Song Yi.
Song Yi’s expression was hard to read. He gave a vague “Mm,” without saying anything else.
Wu Xianrou frowned. She’d come all this way, been through a hijacking and taken hostage, and this was how he acted?
“What’s that supposed to mean?” She gave his chest a thump. “Why are you acting so cold and cryptic?”
Song Yi rubbed his chest and simply replied, “One of my subordinates died. I’m not in a good place right now. That’s all.”
“So one of your men died. What’s that got to do with you giving me attitude? It’s not like I killed him,” Wu Xianrou said, feeling deeply wronged.
After everything she’d gone through, he couldn’t even comfort her a little?
Hadn’t he promised to spoil her and love her?
Ning Shu drove quietly. She only glanced at the couple through the rearview mirror.
To say ‘so one of your men died’ so casually left a bitter taste.
Maybe even Wu Xianrou realized she’d gone too far. She sniffled and apologetically muttered, in a bit tsundere manner, “Sorry. It’s just, your attitude made me feel kind of bad. Don’t worry, I’ll make sure my dad gives a bigger compensation package to the family of your subordinate.”
Song Yi thanked her. “Thanks.”
Ning Shu: …
That compensation money was only what Zhu Yi’s family was rightfully owed.
How had it suddenly turned into something Wu Xianrou deserved credit for?
Ning Shu’s face remained cold as her eyes met Song Yi’s. He gave her a small shake of the head.
Ning Shu jerked the steering wheel a little too sharply while making a turn. Wu Xianrou lurched forward, smacking her forehead against the window.
Rubbing her head, Wu Xianrou looked at Ning Shu. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
“The car just turned,” Ning Shu replied. “If I’d really meant to hurt you, I wouldn’t have come with Commander Song to rescue you in the first place.”
Wu Xianrou pouted and didn’t say anything.
Ning Shu continued, “Still, thank you for applying for Zhu Yi’s compensation. He was killed in an explosion. There wasn’t a body left to recover.”
“If the squad commander hadn’t come in time to save you, you might have ended up like Zhu Yi. So, I’d really appreciate it if you did everything you could to help get his family that money.” She smiled at Wu Xianrou, flashing her white teeth.
Wu Xianrou straightened her posture. “Of course I will. Besides, he was one of Song Yi’s men.”
Ning Shu just said, “Miss Wu, you truly are someone who understands the bigger picture.”
Wu Xianrou felt a bit puzzled, wondering if she was being mocked. But then it hit her—this was all about the compensation money. That was why Ning Shu was suddenly being so polite.
She curled her lips in faint disdain, as if mocking Ning Shu for being the kind of person who would grovel for money.
Song Yi wiped a hand across his face and turned to Wu Xianrou. “I’ll handle the matter. You don’t need to worry about it. Don’t wear yourself out.”
“Really?” Wu Xianrou looked at him hopefully.
Song Yi gave a noncommittal hum in reply.
Ning Shu focused on the road. They soon arrived at the force’s temporary camp.
Song Yi needed to report on the mission, so he left Wu Xianrou in Ning Shu’s care for the time being.
Ning Shu led her to a tent. “This is my tent. Get settled in and change your clothes.”
“I can’t wear your clothes. Can’t you find me something else?” Wu Xianrou asked.
Expressionlessly, Ning Shu responded, “No. Things were so urgent back there, no one had time to think about grabbing your luggage.”
At a time like this, she’d have to make do.
Wu Xianrou wanted to argue but held back. This woman had just saved her life. In the end, she put on Ning Shu’s military uniform.
Wu Xianrou had delicate features and fair skin. Even in camouflage, she looked like a strikingly pretty soldier. When she stepped out of the tent, she immediately caught the attention of quite a few people.
She walked over to Ning Shu and asked, “Where did Song Yi go?”
Ning Shu turned to Little Nine and asked, “Where’s the squad commander?”
Little Jiu lifted his head from the computer screen with a blank expression. “No idea.”
Ning Shu shook her head at Wu Xianrou. “Don’t know. We’re all checking our gear and weapons. He’s probably making his report.”
Wu Xianrou let out a soft “oh,” then limped off to find Song Yi, dragging her injured foot behind her.
Little Nine gave Ning Shu a sideways glance. “Didn’t think you two actually got her out. She’s got some insane luck.”
“Make sure she doesn’t hear you say that,” Ning Shu warned while wiping down her gun. “You’ll never hear the end of it. Don’t forget who her father is, either.”
Little Nine didn’t care. He said, “I’m not afraid of her dad. Even if I leave the military, I’ll still be just fine.”
Ning Shu glanced over at him. “Are yu thinking about leaving the service?”
“It kind of feels pointless now. I used to stick around for the squad commander’s sake, but now that he’s got his own goals in life, I need to start figuring out mine.” His eyes didn’t leave the screen, and his fingers flew over the keyboard.
From the sound of it, Ning Shu could tell he was gaming.
