Chapter 3437: Combustion (26)

Chapter 3437: Combustion (26)

“I seem to remember Zhu Yi has a younger brother who is in university now,” said Old Two.

Zhu Yi had joined the military because his family was poor. Enlisting meant receiving a subsidy.

He had both a younger brother and a younger sister.

The pressure on him had been immense.

“They’re now the family of a fallen hero. The local government will definitely give them preferential treatment,” Song Yi said while wiping a hand down his face. “I might be getting removed from my post. Things got unpleasant between me and Political Commissar Wu because of Wu Xianrou.”

“That can’t be right, Sir. We’ve completed more major missions than we can count on two hands and two feet. Surely they wouldn’t remove you over something like this.”

“Are your medals—and ours—fake or something?”

Everyone began talking at once, voicing their indignation.

Little Nine said directly, “Just explain the situation to the Wu family. It’s not like they can cover the sky with one hand. If they want to remove you, they still need a proper reason.”

Ning Shu added, “If the political commissar is really using your relationship as leverage, he must be seriously lacking in brains.”

Matters of the heart might feel earth-shattering to a young girl, but to people in their line of work, it was nothing—barely even a blip on the radar.

If the political commissar really was using this as ammunition, then that would be the real idiocy.

If they were going to pin anything on Song Yi, it would have to be political in nature.

“Either way, I need to prepare myself. I’ve clearly crossed him this time,” Song Yi said while letting out a long breath, as though a weight had been lifted off his chest and he could finally straighten his back again.

Ning Shu simply said, “Wu Xianrou’s really something. What was she doing running into a dangerous mission like that? And why didn’t her father stop her? Doesn’t he understand how serious these things are?”

Song Yi’s expression flickered. He nodded. “Yeah.”

Just as Song Yi was talking with his team in the office, someone opened the door and told him there was someone looking for him.

Song Yi stepped out—and there stood Wu Xianrou. Wind whipped gently at her white dress, which swayed lightly with her movements.

Her hands were clasped behind her back, and when she turned her head, she was like a painting brought to life.

Looking at her like this, Song Yi was reminded of everything she represented to him.

Innocence. Beauty. A complete lack of bloodshed. A purity that had been protected.

He walked over and asked, “What is it?”

“I’m here to break up with you. We’re not suited to be together,” Wu Xianrou said. Her cheeks were tinged pink.

“We broke up last night, didn’t we?” Song Yi said calmly.

“I’m here today to make it official. I know I was being wilful. I’m sorry. But you and I—this can’t go on.”

“Why?”

“Don’t ask why. Just know that I’m the one in the wrong. You’ll find someone who makes you happy,” she said with her eyes lowered.

Ning Shu was eavesdropping with all her might, trying to make out their conversation.

To be honest, it was the first time she’d seen Wu Xianrou speak so softly and gently to Song Yi.

Who would’ve thought her gentlest moment would actually be at the point when they were breaking up?

The official couple was actually breaking up?

Ning Shu raised her brows. Had something happened?

She thought quickly and released her spiritual consciousness to inspect Wu Xianrou’s body.

With the sweep of her spiritual consciousness, any abnormalities in Wu Xianrou’s condition were immediately apparent to her.

There were faint marks on her soft skin—rosy hickeys and some bluish bruises.

Ning Shu was startled. Had Wu Xianrou really slept with that playboy?

She had nerves of steel, that girl.

That man was a notorious womaniser.

But perhaps Wu Xianrou could be the one to make him turn over a new leaf, to leave him so enamoured that no other woman would ever appeal to him again.

Some people were just different like that.

Ning Shu could already picture what would happen between Wu Xianrou and that playboy.

She’d always be getting into catfights with the playboy’s string of bed partners.

So, after confirming that Song Yi wasn’t going to give Wu Xianrou his whole heart, another man appeared. A man who could give Wu Xianrou love.

The taste of love, at least.

Ning Shu tugged at the corner of her mouth. Wu Xianrou really was heaven’s favorite.

And Song Yi? He could only end up getting dumped. Worse still, he had to walk away branded as the scumbag ex.

Ning Shu nearly clapped her hands in applause. Damn, that was brilliant.

She was dissatisfied with Song Yi, but because he was her superior, there were things she couldn’t openly say.

But that didn’t mean she didn’t dislike him deep down.

Once Song Yi calmed down, he said, “Wu Xianrou, I’ll respect your decision. Let’s break up.”

Wu Xianrou immediately felt annoyed. If he had clung to her, she would’ve gotten impatient.

But now that he’d agreed so bluntly and easily, she felt like Song Yi didn’t love her at all. He wasn’t even trying to hold on to her.

People were just that contradictory.

“Well then, I wish you happiness.” Wu Xianrou turned and walked away.

“Wait a second,” Song Yi called after her.

She looked back and asked, “What else?”

“Please explain to your father clearly that we broke up because you have a new boyfriend.”

Wu Xianrou’s face darkened instantly. “So you’re saying I’m the one who cheated first? Song Yi, the entire time I was with you, I never once felt like I was actually your girlfriend. You didn’t celebrate my birthday with me—not even a single bouquet of flowers.

“I risked my safety to go see you, and you called me reckless and immature.”

Wu Xianrou was practically in tears now. Her voice was thick with accusation.

Song Yi rubbed his eyebrows. “I’m not worthy of you.”

Wu Xianrou turned and walked away again.

Her retreating figure looked both strong and heartbreakingly fragile.

It had been a long time since Ning Shu had seen this type of female lead.

Wu Xianrou looked like the bold, decisive type—the type to dump a scumbag ex, meet the right person, and find happiness.

But really, she was just self-centered, the kind who put love above all else, as she was craving some grand, earth-shattering romance.

Ning Shu let out a cold little laugh.

This breakup had hit Song Yi harder than expected.

Meanwhile, whenever Ning Shu went online, she kept seeing gossip about the playboy CEO Su—his endless parade of female companions.

The latest one? Wu Xianrou.

Wu Xianrou was dressed to the nines in a stunning gown, hanging onto CEO Su’s arm.

From the looks of it, this CEO Su probably could give her a love that was passionate and unforgettable.

But it wasn’t going to be easy for Wu Xianrou to tame a man who’d been through a forest of women.

She’d definitely have to suffer for a while.

Ning Shu couldn’t be bothered with Wu Xianrou’s affairs. That girl’s brain was completely overtaken by the love bug. It was like she couldn’t live without love.

When she had nothing going on, Ning Shu took on minor missions, but none of those high-risk international missions.

Still, something was better than nothing.

Plus, she was doing missions alongside other squads.

Song Yi, who was still heartbroken, wasn’t getting over it anytime soon. His men were either left idle or joining other squads on assignments.

During this time, something else happened. Wu Xianrou’s father got a warning.

All because of his daughter’s constant exposure in the media.

She and CEO Su were all lovey-dovey, showing up everywhere together.
