Chapter 3436: Combustion (25)
Ning Shu and the others all looked at Song Yi with sympathy.
It looked like Song Yi had just been dumped.
Dumped and cheated on—with a domineering company CEO, no less.
Ning Shu blinked. Had Song Yi already been kicked out of the male lead position?
They hadn’t rushed into a flash marriage at the beginning, and now things were shifting.
Song Yi steadied himself. “Stop fooling around. Your father is still waiting for you at home. Go change and come back with us.”
“I’m an adult,” Wu Xianrou said while clinging to CEO Su’s arm. “What’s wrong with being with my boyfriend? Go home and tell my father I’m not coming back tonight.”
She was deliberately trying to provoke Song Yi, hoping to make him jealous, to push him into a frenzy—anything to prove that he still loved her.
Wu Xianrou’s idea of love was still stuck at a shallow, sensory level.
The veins on Song Yi’s forehead throbbed, but he still held it in.
At that moment, the endurance of a special forces soldier was on full display.
Seeing Song Yi still unmoved, Wu Xianrou snapped. “Song Yi, just leave. I have something to say to my boyfriend.”
Ning Shu frowned. This girl was truly the most willful person she had ever met.
Why did someone like that still have people willing to protect her, to care for her?
She must be the secret daughter of Lady Luck herself.
Ning Shu said, “Miss Wu, that’s enough. Stop pushing it.”
She turned to the seductive, domineering company CEO and said, “We’re from the national special forces. If we decided to take her by force, do you think you could stop us? You’re harboring the daughter of our superior.”
CEO Su shrugged. “So what if you’re special forces? You’re paid with taxpayers’ money. I’m a major taxpayer. You sure you want to do this?”
He winked at Ning Shu with a teasing glint. “Isn’t this an abuse of power?”
Ning Shu: …
This guy had some nerve. He was even trying to flirt with her?
Was he not afraid of getting his bones shattered and tendons torn?
Song Yi said to Ning Shu, “This is my business. Don’t get involved. It’s personal—it has nothing to do with the country.”
Ning Shu responded with a short “Oh,” took a step back, and kept quiet.
CEO Su winked at her again.
Ning Shu rolled her eyes so hard they nearly disappeared into the back of her skull.
This so-called CEO had ‘player; written all over him. Sleeping with women was like collecting stamps to him.
He got a beautiful girl right next to you, and yet he was making eyes at her?
Ning Shu wanted nothing to do with seductive, arrogant types like him.
Song Yi looked at Wu Xianrou. “Are you coming back with me or not?”
“No,” Wu Xianrou said, chin raised.
“Let’s go,” Song Yi said and turned on his heel. He walked out of the presidential suite in his raincoat.
Not only was Wu Xianrou stunned—Ning Shu and the rest of the squad were stunned too.
Now what? Were they supposed to leave or not?
Ning Shu made a decisive exit. Seeing that, the rest of the squad followed suit.
Wu Xianrou: …
CEO Su shrugged at her. “So what now?”
Wu Xianrou bit her lip in anger and grabbed the lapels of his robe. “We’re boyfriend and girlfriend now, right? Then let’s do what boyfriends and girlfriends are supposed to do.”
CEO Su: …
He pried her hands off his bathrobe and asked, “Are you a soldier?”
Wu Xianrou froze. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I’ve never slept with a soldier before,” CEO Su said.
“You’re disgusting. You’re shameless! You’d actually go for someone like Wu Jing? You’re revolting.” Wu Xianrou was livid.
CEO Su spread his hands. “It’s like food. You can’t judge the taste just by how it looks.”
Disgusting. Filthy. Wu Xianrou was absolutely livid.
“Don’t be angry,” CEO Su said while lifting her chin with a finger. His eyes narrowed slightly, giving him a particularly seductive air.
Wu Xianrou stared blankly at that face, overwhelmed by the wave of raw masculine energy radiating from him. Her heart thudded uncontrollably in her chest.
Her entire body trembled, as though an electric current had shot through her. This wasn’t something she had ever felt with Song Yi.
Dangerous—and yet completely enthralling.
Her throat felt dry. She swallowed hard. Her ears were filled with the thunder of her own heartbeat.
It felt like love—at least the sensation of it.
Wu Xianrou shut her eyes tightly. CEO Su smiled faintly and leaned in, pressing a kiss to her soft lips.
If she offered herself up like this, he’d be a fool not to take her.
Meanwhile, Ning Shu and the rest of the squad caught up to the retreating Song Yi.
“Sir, maybe we should go back and check.”
“Yeah, that pretty boy doesn’t look like any decent sort.”
“If Miss Wu really gets hurt, how are you going to explain it to Political Commissar Wu?”
Everyone tried to persuade him. They advised him not to let anger cloud his judgement and cost him more than he could afford.
The rain was still coming down, drumming steadily against their raincoats. Song Yi shook his head and said, “If this is how it is, then forget it. I’m just a special forces soldier—one who could die at any time. I don’t have the luxury of time to spend on babysitting her.”
Ning Shu said nothing. She knew better than to draw conclusions too early.
After all, those two were the official couple. If they could be pulled apart this easily, how could it be called true love?
Love stronger than gold and all that.
Ning Shu decided not to interfere anymore. She’d done everything she could. What Song Yi chose now was up to him.
“The rain’s heavy. Let’s head back,” Ning Shu said, leading the way.
The others were exhausted too. No one wanted to stay out in this downpour any longer.
So they all returned.
After a hot shower and a change of clothes, Ning Shu finally felt human again. She made herself a cup of ginger tea to warm up.
There was currently a deputy-level position open, and Ning Shu was planning to throw her hat into the ring.
She just wasn’t sure if being a woman would mean she’d be passed over.
There were quite a few people eyeing that spot.
Ning Shu opened her laptop and submitted the application form.
If something was worth fighting for, you had to fight for it.
The entrustor had completed plenty of missions. Her resume was impressive.
As a female special forces operative, it hadn’t come easy.
She had wanted to remain under Song Yi’s command indefinitely. She’d missed out on many opportunities because of that.
In the end, she gained nothing from it.
Song Yi hadn’t led them towards some higher calling. The entrustor had died as just a regular soldier, and even her family didn’t get a single extra penny in compensation.
With the application form submitted, Ning Shu stretched and opened a drawer. Inside were several medals.
Every time a mission ended, she’d receive either a bonus or a medal. They expected the horse to gallop and naturally had to give it grass to eat, especially when it was a job that required risking their life.
She should be able to move up another rank. While sitting cross-legged on the narrow bed, Ning Shu began to use what little spiritual energy she had to tend to the internal injuries in her body.
If she didn’t deal with them now, they’d be agony when she got older.
This job really was a gamble with one’s life.
The next day, Song Yi called the whole squad together and distributed the mission bonus among them.
He didn’t keep a penny for himself. Instead, he gave his entire share to Zhu Yi’s family.
Ning Shu took a stack of bills from her own envelope and placed them on the table. “This is from me—for Zhu Yi.”
Back in that moment of crisis, Zhu Yi had assessed the situation. He knew he wasn’t going to make it, and he gave her the only chance to live.
The others followed suit. Each one of them quietly took a stack of their money and placed it on the table.
