Chapter 3441: Beggar Treatment
Ning Shu stepped into the air and left the city lord’s residence behind as she surveyed the state of the City of Water. However, she noticed that Xiao Huo was emitting a faint red glow and heat that was actually affecting the city’s barrier.
Water and fire were naturally opposing forces. Water could extinguish fire, but fire could also evaporate water. With a flick of her finger, Ning Shu placed a barrier around the fire essence to block its power from clashing with the city. She then began to reinforce the massive barrier protecting all of the City of Water. Ning Shu cherished the city now as if it were her own eyes. After all, this was her money tree.
After reinforcing it several times, Ning Shu landed on the street and casually walked into a shop.
“Time to collect taxes.”
One by one, the payments reached her account as she collected from every shop she passed. The tax from these small shops was not much. The real heavy hitters were places like the gambling dens and restaurants.
Ning Shu checked her account and saw she already had nearly 100,000 faith points, and she had not even visited the major taxpayers yet.
Standing at the entrance of the gambling den, she walked in with a beaming smile. Si Tian was already waiting for her and transferred 200,000 merit points to her account.
The sheer amount of merit nearly made Ning Shu’s head spin.
Holy crap. She only earned 20,000 merit points for saving an entire broken world, yet here was 200,000. Ning Shu’s account had never held so much merit before. Fireworks of joy erupted in her heart, and she was absolutely elated.
On the surface, she remained perfectly calm and asked indifferently, “Have you got any unpaid taxes?”
Si Tian, who was dressed in shenyi1Looks like this: robe with wide sleeves, lightly brushed his sleeves and bowed. “I would not dare hide anything from you.”
Ning Shu gave a small grunt of approval and turned to leave. Looking back at the bustling gambling den, she realized it truly was a place that sucked in gold. It almost made her want to start a business herself, though she knew she had no talent for it.
She continued along the road, collecting more taxes. Although the amounts were small, every little bit was still something. Finally, she stood before the entrance of the auction house. This place should be even more profitable than the gambling den.
However, when she tried to enter the auction house, she was told she had to pay a 500-merit entry fee.
Ning Shu: …
I am here to collect taxes, yet you are telling me I have to pay an entry fee?
Ning Shu looked at the guard with a forced smile. Do you see the water drop mark on my forehead? I am here to collect taxes.
She felt a wave of unfriendliness. The auction house was even more arrogant than she had imagined.
“The city lord has arrived. Please forgive our lack of a proper welcome. Please, come in,” a woman said, while walking over with a graceful, swaying gait.
Ning Shu looked at her with a cold, expressionless face.
“The doorman did not recognize the city lord. Please, forgive us,” the woman said with a smile.
Ning Shu smiled back. Was the mark between her brows just a decoration? There was no way they didn’t recognize her. This was a deliberate show of power to put her in her place.
Ning Shu sensed that her path to collecting taxes today might not be very smooth.
“This way, City Lord.” The woman led Ning Shu to a luxurious private box.
“Come to think of it, this is the city lord’s first time at the auction house, isn’t it?” the woman asked while pouring tea.
“I have been here before,” Ning Shu said flatly.
The woman smiled, appearing very slick and professional. “Then it was our poor hospitality that made us forget.”
Ning Shu got straight to the point. “I am here to collect taxes.”
What was the use of talking so much? Just give me the money.
“Of course.” The woman smiled and transferred 100,000 faith points to Ning Shu.
When Ning Shu saw the 100,000 faith points, she nearly slammed her hand on the table and stood up. Was she treating her like a beggar?
The prices of items at their auctions were enough to give someone a heart attack. Was she supposed to believe the auction house made so little profit that this was all they owed in taxes?
Ning Shu’s expression turned very ugly. “Your business is so terrible, I am surprised the auction house hasn’t gone bankrupt yet.”
The woman gave a charming, flirtatious smile. “Our auction house has always paid this much. It has been the same for a long time.”
Ning Shu let out a cold laugh. “You only pay this much?”
“City Lord, we have always paid this amount,” the woman said, while picking up her teacup and taking a sip.
Ning Shu’s expression turned cold. “In that case, perhaps I shouldn’t be collecting taxes from the auction house at all?”
“If the city lord is so generous, then our auction house thanks you for your great mercy.”
The woman seemed to ignore the underlying threat in Ning Shu’s words and simply followed her lead.
Ning Shu sneered inwardly. To be this bold, the power behind the auction house must be significant. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be acting so stuck-up.
Ning Shu stood up. “A mosquito’s leg is still meat, no matter how small. Why wouldn’t I take it? I will take this 100,000 today, but I can also take millions later. There is no need to see me out.”
Ning Shu walked out of the auction house and turned back to look at the towering building, thinking, ‘I will make you spit it all out with interest eventually. I won’t ask for more than what is mine, but you will give me every bit I am owed.’
“Manager, was it really okay to only give her 100,000?” the woman asked toward a curtain.
A hand as white as jade pulled the curtain aside, and a man appeared from behind it.
“It is fine. She is just a woman who got lucky and became the city lord of the City of Water. I have never even heard of her before,” the man said dismissively.
Ning Shu arrived at Shu Bai’s restaurant, and Shu Bai transferred 150,000 faith points to her.
See? Even a restaurant paid more than the auction house. They were clearly insulting her and treating her like a beggar.
“Who is the backer of the auction house?” Ning Shu asked Shu Bai after knocking back two cups of tea.
Shu Bai said gently, “The strength of anyone who can run an auction house cannot be underestimated. Did they short-change you on taxes?”
Ning Shu was extremely annoyed, but she realized she didn’t have a solution yet. Could she go and complain? Telling people she didn’t have the ability to collect her own taxes would be incredibly embarrassing. This was a world where the strong were respected. Crying about it would only make people look down on her.
After leaving the restaurant, Ning Shu collected more taxes along the way until she reached the entrance of the consultation room.
Haha. Shouldn’t the silver-haired man have to pay her taxes too?
She walked inside, and the air was filled with the elegant, lingering scent of agarwood. Ning Shu sat down in a chair and waited for him to come out.
After a long while, the silver-haired man finally pulled back the curtain and emerged from the inner room. He never seemed to be without a book in his hand. When he saw Ning Shu, his expression remained unchanged. He sat down and asked, “What do you want to consult about this time?”
Ning Shu gave a slight smile. “I am not here for a consultation. You must have forgotten something.”
The silver-haired man glanced at her. His gaze lingered briefly on her forehead. “You are here to collect money this time?”
“Isn’t that obvious?” Ning Shu felt wonderful. In the past, the silver-haired man was always the one draining her of funds. Just staying for a few moments cost money. Now that she could squeeze money out of his hands, she couldn’t be happier.
Ning Shu took a deep breath of the agarwood scent, feeling a cool, refreshing sensation through her soul. It was very comfortable.
Go ahead, try to ask me for money now.
Ning Shu maintained a dignified smile. Give me the money!
The silver-haired man looked indifferently at the gloating Ning Shu. She blinked at him, while thinking, ‘Give me the money, what are you waiting for? Surely he doesn’t want to skip out on the bill? Or is it that the consultation room has no business and he has no money?’
Ning Shu stared at him until he finally spoke.
The silver-haired man thought for a moment and said, “I’m not paying tax money, but I can let you consult on one question for free.”
