Alex felt a strange sense of dilemma from the Emulous Cycle of Yin and Yang technique. On one hand, he wasn't opposed to the idea. Had it been any other woman out there whom he had never found attractive in this way, it might have been a problem. But since he was attracted to Shumi, whether it was genuine or not, he was more or less okay with the idea so long as she was on board as well.
But, on the other hand, there were still tiny voices in the back of his head, telling him it was wrong.
Alex looked away from Shumi for a moment, looking back toward the Sun God who stood before him.
"Is this the only way?" he asked. "Is there no other way to evolve my physique?"
"This is the fastest and safest way," the Sun God explained. "As the two of you cultivate, the quality of your Qi will grow alongside you, helping you grow together. If you were to use some external source of Yin Qi, it would be difficult to modulate how much you absorb and how strong it is. It is not that it isn't possible, but this is just the easiest way."
Alex understood what the Sun God was trying to say. In a way, he did think that this was an incredible method to improve his body constitution. And yet, those voices were unrelenting.
He knew for a fact that so long as those voices were there, his cultivation sessions would not be successful. He had to quell them here and now.
"One last question," Alex said. "How did we come to be?"
The Sun God showed no change in his expression, looking at Alex with a plain look. His face was still unidentifiable, as his features kept on changing. After what felt like a short pause, the god began speaking.
"We didn't choose anyone. It was all up to random chance," the Sun God said.
"Random chance?" Alex asked. "Elaborate."
"In the process of placing our Intent to bring order to the shattered world, we understood that we were going to have to die as well, so we left behind some powers to allow someone like you to grow, someone whose body could handle the power of a god."
"The power affected a random someone the moment they were born. When they are born, the same power begins to gather once again, ready to affect another person. But until the existing one dies, the power is not put to use."
"Sometimes, the new ones who are born die too quickly, not giving us enough time to gather our powers. When that happens, the new ones that are born with our powers are weaker than normal, sometimes only having aspects of our power and never the whole."
"But if given enough time, someone like you is born as well. That is what we were waiting for."
Alex's eyes widened slightly in surprise. "That's it?" he asked. "You wait for someone to be born and leave them be?"
"No, we try to push them toward that which they need to improve. But it is never more than just a nudge. We cannot interfere openly. Or rather, we do not want to. Not until we're certain you are capable of reaching the next stage."
"Nudging?" Alex asked. "Have you done so with me?"
"A little," the Sun God said.
"When?"
"There were two important moments. First, when I sent you to the city where the owner of the Moon Goddess' body was already present. It was a location close to where the Nine Yang Divine Fruit was growing, and you needed to be there."
Alex's eyes widened. "You did that?" he asked. "What about the next?"
"The other time was when I had the mortals see a vision of the future, so they may send you to a location where you could improve."
Alex's eyes narrowed this time around. "I… I went to Hell because of you?"
"Yes. That was the only way for you to improve your body."
Alex didn't know what to say. Should he get angry? He just couldn't bring forth that emotion even if he knew he had to get angry.
"Other than that, there were many tiny moments that could be more or less considered me manipulating probabilities to make things happen that were overall good for you. But those I did without even thinking," the Sun God said. "A lot of what you would consider to be your own luck came from me."
Alex's eyes were wide. His luck wasn't his own?
"Why did you decide to show yourself?" Alex asked. "Did you show yourself to the others as well?"
"Never, only to you," the Sun God said. "Not because you are different, which you are, but because this is the first time that both you and the vessel of the Moon Goddess have reached this stage together. When we knew the chance of you evolving your body was high, we acted."
"I… I see," Alex said, taking a deep breath. "So, just to confirm, if I were to die, you have your powers ready to give to some other child that is born somewhere in the many realms, correct?"
"That is correct."
"And that child will have in no way a connection to me, aside from the fact that I just happened to have the power before he did," Alex asked.
"That is also correct."
Alex nodded. "Thank you. I needed to hear that."
This was all Alex needed to hear to calm the voices in his head. He now had a full confirmation from the Sun God himself that there was no reincarnation involved in their birth. It was a power that was removed from the cycle of reincarnation.
As such, Shumi was most definitely not Ma Rong. She was not a reincarnation of the first woman outside of his family that he had come to love.
Alex felt a load the size of a mountain lift from his chest, and he finally looked away from the Sun God again to look back at Shumi.
