North America Gunman Detective

Chapter 641: Fishing Expedition (Part 2)

Jimmy: "Alright, let's stick to normal investigation."

Phone tracking requires base station data information. To achieve this, at least permission from a telecom company or intelligence agency is needed. If Falcknei's people really have this kind of permission, then things get complicated.

Right now, for Jimmy and his team to use phone tracking, they need to activate the command center or get authorization from someone like Ruiz to apply at the tech department. Of course, going to NSA, the Anti-Terrorism Bureau, or the Department of Homeland Security is also an option, but still requires authorization.

If these people can get such permission, even if by paying for it, the power they can subsequently mobilize would be considerable.

Since they were still busy, Jimmy didn't disturb them. He left the office, went downstairs to smoke, and made a phone call to Justin. This time, it was answered quickly.

Justin: "Who is this?"

Jimmy: "Justin, it's me, Jimmy."

Justin: "Oh, what's up? You called me once this morning?"

Jimmy: "Yeah, I forgot about your schedule when I called this morning. How have you been lately?"

Justin: "Same as usual, nothing special. What's going on with you?"

Jimmy: "You know, I'm about to get married soon. Any chance you can come in May?"

Justin: "Of course, send me an invitation. You know the address."

Jimmy: "Uh, I'll definitely send out the invites, but I have a small request. Would you be interested in being the best man?"

Justin was at a loss, a bit confused, "What did you say?"

Jimmy: "Be my best man. I remember you're single, right?"

Justin: "Wait, is there something wrong with your head? Can I publicly be the best man at your wedding?"

Jimmy: "Actually, it shouldn't matter much, people's attention isn't usually focused on the best man. Mainly, I'm originally from Little Rock, but since coming to New York, I rarely keep in touch with people from back there. It's really hard to find a suitable best man."

Justin: "Still, it won't work. My status and the status of the people appearing at your wedding don't match. Besides, attending as your hometown friend makes sense, but being the best man would put me into retirement, don't you think?"

Jimmy: "Well, okay, if you insist. Oh, when you come, I'll introduce you to Woody, my bartender. He's a very professional mixologist."

Justin: "Alright, send over the invite, and I'll plan ahead."

Jimmy: "Okay, that's it then, goodbye."

Jimmy hung up and continued smoking. Now he really had to worry. If Justin wasn't an option, then Woody probably wasn't either, as he wasn't one for the limelight. Should Mark, his subordinate, end up being the best man?

It was indeed a bit of a conundrum, but he had alternatives, so there was no rush. He decided to think about it for a couple more days.

Jimmy returned to his office, and before the end of the day, finally received a notification from Mark. Mahong and his team had identified a kidnapper's appearance through video and obtained the license plate of the SUV they drove. However, the bad news was that the license plate was confirmed to be fake, so they could only attempt to investigate their whereabouts for now. As for the clear face they had found, they needed to wait for the facial recognition results, which wasn't a quick task.

They'd actually been quite thorough in their preparations—the kidnappers all wore gloves, leaving no fingerprint information behind. Otherwise, it would have been much easier to investigate.

After work, Jimmy first bought flowers and fruit, then went to the hospital to visit Julia and Jones, who still had to be there. After chatting for a bit, they seemed likely to be going home for further recuperation in a few days.

Julia seemed to be doing okay, but she was still complaining about leaving unsightly scars that would prevent her from wearing swimsuits at the beach. Jimmy was helpless; getting shot is unpredictable.

He could only comfort her by suggesting she try to get scar-removal surgery at a cosmetic hospital once recovered. However, Jimmy wasn't familiar with this, as his previous gunshot wounds had healed. Perhaps due to his constitution, his gunshot wounds left only faint discoloration, which was relatively fortunate and didn't require any scar-removal surgery.

But he dared not directly tell Julia about this. Women tend to mind scars on their bodies, and if Jimmy were to say that to her, he'd probably be killed on the spot.

The next morning, when Jimmy arrived at the office, Mark was already seated at his place. "Mark, how's the investigation going over there?"

Mark: "The image was sent to ICE yesterday, and their reply was that the result should be available before the end of the day today. So temporarily there's not much we can investigate. Oh, and that SUV has disappeared; we have no leads. New York's road monitoring can't cover the whole city."

Jimmy: "Yeah, surveillance isn't all-powerful. We'll take it step by step. This case might not be simple later on. Make sure to wear a bullet-proof vest the entire time you go out to investigate; they might be the same mercenaries, and their shooting skills likely aren't bad. We've already lost Julia; you must be careful."

Mark: "Got it, I'll be careful."

Mark had been shot before, so he should be aware. Along with Mahong, their safety should still be relatively assured.

Jimmy sat back at his desk and started reviewing the case files. There were quite a few cases from Manhattan, just waiting to see which ones would be passed over. The NYPD was too capable, making it seem like Jimmy's team was overly idle.

There weren't any new cases yet, and he could browse through old cases. But after checking out a few, Jimmy once again focused on the dark web case.

The dismemberment case on the dark web had no clues, indicating this cruel suspect might continue to commit crimes. Since he's filming videos for sale on the dark web, aside from the so-called thrill of crime, he definitely also needs this income.

If they were to continue investigating this case, they might need to contact DC headquarters to compile information from various offices and see if they have other dark web video leads. However, this would require too many resources, far beyond what a homicide team leader could arrange.

Feeling a bit unwilling, Jimmy could only continue reviewing the materials, noting the details of the clues, so he could quickly cross-reference them if he saw related issues elsewhere in the future.

In the afternoon, Mahong and Neil came to the homicide team office, "Jimmy, we have a plan that needs your help."

Jimmy looked at the two of them, "What's up?"

Mahong: "Neil has an idea to use Falcknei to draw out the people trying to kidnap him, but we can't ensure Falcknei's safety. So, could you help by following Falcknei and trying to protect him?"

Jimmy was speechless, "You're fishing, huh? With Falcknei as the bait, there's bound to be risk, but he should be able to accept that risk, right?"

Neil: "Jimmy, Falcknei is my friend. I can persuade him to accept this operation, but I can't let him go to his death."

Jimmy: "You guys just drive a surveillance car nearby, won't that suffice? Isn't following him closely to protect him a bit much?"

Neil: "Please, we need to wrap this up quickly; he's almost driven insane. Considering how he previously helped us with those artworks, help him out, won't you?"

Jimmy looked at Neil's expression; he seemed very serious, not his usual playful self. The relationship between Falcknei and Neil must be quite good, enough to make him ask like this.

Jimmy: "Are you sure? Even if I help, I can't follow him around all the time."

Neil: "I'll have him carefully put out some information, enough to draw them out."

Jimmy: "Alright then, you guys prepare the preliminary work, and notify me when ready."

Neil: "Thanks, thank you very much."

After Mahong and Neil left, Mark came over to Jimmy, "Are you really going to protect Falcknei?"

Jimmy: "Give it a try. If we can really lure them out, it will be a lot easier for us, tracking clues is too difficult and the data is incomplete."

Mark: "But if they act again this time, it might not just be one or two people."

Jimmy: "Don't worry, I'll be prepared. You just follow Mahong and the others when the time comes and provide support."

Mark: "Understood."
