Kurt and Talia were outside Kurt's house. They had come back from their battle with the Sorcerer Student. Things returned to normal for a few days. Their traveling merchant activities had started. Plans for some events, like Layla's Coronation and their wedding combining the clans, were beginning to take form.
Until that day, the cloud parted and an odd ray of light, that didn't match the sun's position, came down with an Angel. The female had white wings. What else could you call her? Blonde hair flowing in the wind on her descent, in a simple white outfit with gold trim and a sword leisurely on her waist.
"So you're the one," the Angel spoke.
"Me?" said Kurt.
"Yes you," looking at Talia, "why would I come for Darien's pup?"
"Pup?" said Talia. The angel looked at Talia, turned her, and it seemed pressure was being placed on Talia.
"Stop that," said Kurt. "Who are you?"
"Rosie, the archangel of Ishtar of the pantheon of Horus."
"Okay…" Kurt had heard of Horus before. The dragon Darien served him. Kurt never really believed the goblins and elves about gods and demons. But this angel was right in front of them. "So why are you here?"
"It's not every day you hear about," the angel looked at Kurt and felt a strange chill come over him as she had just looked through him. "A child of a dead god being born."
"A dead god?"
"Neptune."
"My father isn't Neptune."
The angel walked toward the edge of the pillar, her armor glimmering in the sunlight, toward the side that had the waterfall below it. "Yet here is his river, and his divine lineage is clearly with you." The tranquil scene of the canyon, the river, and the grasslands was actually quite a view. She came closer, "and you are far too young to have been born before he died."
The angel looked around and continued. "And another, a half-sister perhaps? This little fae Darien spoke of, the only one who would call herself princess of the fae."
Kurt started to feel uneasy at the situation, who was this person? Why was he so sure he couldn't take her in a fight? It was like every time he would get stronger, another level and another on top of it appeared.
Talia whispered into Kurt's ear, "She is just radiating power, it's so much Kurt. It's blinding my eyes. I had to turn off the ability."
"If you're looking for an audience with the princess..."
"An audience?" Said Rosie, "Hmmm, I guess that would be the way right? I assumed she'd come to me. But I guess I did show up without any notice. But first, I wish to see this gate."
"Of course, my lady," said Talia, nudging Kurt.
"You may lead the way," said Rosie.
Instead of going through the pillar like normal Talia had decided to make a rock platform she could lower both of them on. The angel had no need and flew down. Standing flying seemed interchangeable in an instant to the angel.
They walked up to the gate and stopped.
"So? Where is it?" said Rosie.
"It's actually right here," said Kurt. He took a step to the other side, waited a moment, and walked back. It was normal for creatures from this side of the gate to not see it, unless Layla opened it all the way.
The angel attempted to walk through but couldn't cross the portal's entrance simply walking through the space like it wasn't there.
"Fascinating," said Rosie. She looked to be trying to see the gate intently. He felt that chill before. "It's almost there when I try hard."
"It's right there," said Talia.
"You're very strange creatures, goblins, elves, and Minotaurs all together. And whatever you are some strange elf thing, or like a tall gnome," said Rosie.
"Humans."
"Humans, yes that is what the word was."
"Is there anything else we can help you with?" said Kurt.
"I don't understand how Darien got through," said Rosie. "It was clear to me he went through."
"Layla has a way."
"Ohh, so this isn't the gate."
"It is."
"But it's locked."
"I guess."
"Then arrange this audience with this Layla. Ishtar has requested another thing of me here. I will return when I'm done. If you can't open this gate then it is of no use to me."
"You can't just go…"
"This was requested upon an altar of Ishtar," said Rosie. She rose from the ground flapping her wings. And set off in a direction.
"Where do you think she is going?"
"The only thing in that direction is," Kurt paused and realized, "Jessica's well."
"I don't like this."
"Me either."
They had been made well aware that there was power beyond them. Their last battle was more of a draw than a win. The opponent had fought off their best people and a dragon all at once. Even with the opportunity the man had just escaped, and he wasn't even the teacher but the student. One look at this angel told you that you should think twice about even approaching her.
Joshua the goblin shaman had walked up. He was normally one of the goblins in charge of watching the gate for them. "Was that what I thought it was?"
"I think so."
"Umm, at least she didn't start attacking. That's a good sign."
"A good sign."
"So what is she?"
"The heralds of gods, they normally identify their god immediately, at least in the stories I've been told. If they are not raining down terror." Joshua turned toward the pillar and the waterfall, "she's not mad about.."
"I don't think so," said Kurt. "She said she follows Ishtar, under Horus."
"That's good news as well, Ishtar is a goddess of healing after all. As well as decay."
"So the goblins worship her," said Kurt.
"Not exactly, more respect her as all gods. We wouldn't normally be a patron"
"Then…" Kurt thought, "It has to be whatever Maliki did."
"That would be possible, as an apostle he would be able to perform rituals for any number of gods."
"An apostle?" said Kurt.
"Well normally you would be a disciple of a particular god, but since Maliki is devout to the spirit of the Kitsune. He can act when there isn't a proper person as a stand-in. The spirits are sort of a special case for the gods. Practically all of them oppose their killing so one that protects them and honors the gods is usually favored."
"So he's an apostle of Kitsune?"
"You could think of it that way, I guess, for simplicity."
