"This is very unlike you," said Layla.
"What do you mean?" said Kurt
"This plan is very out in the open, bold even. But most importantly you are the one suggesting to have a fae rule it openly, and man it with goblins, in your world. This was something you always seemed to want to avoid."
"I know."
"So why the change in heart?"
"I realized we were really bad at it and there wasn't much of a plan."
"We have been terrible about keeping this secret," said Layla.
They were meeting in a small room off from the throne room. Kurt had wanted something a little more private.
"And we really can come from anywhere," said Kurt. Pointing around the map. "Once we are in the area setting up an attack would be simple because sneaking past whatever is much easier for you and me than for an army. Beyond that, it is supposed to be guarded by all these alliances."
"And this pass," Layla said pointing near the keep, "would be easily guarded by Harvey himself. At least well enough for reinforcements to come."
"And if Valentine pushes right after their entire supply line would crumble."
"If the tensions even break out," said Layla.
"We would wait until it does, near here."
"So we would have to start sooner rather than later?"
"Yes," said Kurt, "and since we can slip on the stops we don't even have to move the gate while we do it. But once we are there we can wait."
"We could go at night as well," said Layla. "In a more aerial push."
"We can take the train a lot of the way, we would have dressed a bit down than we normally do, act as citizens, buy tickets."
"I'm not opposed to the idea, just surprised you would allow it. Do we know much about the people there?"
"What do you mean?"
"How likely are they to simply surrender if shown might?"
"What do you mean?"
"I think you are forgetting something about your attack strategy."
Layla and Kurt continued to discuss the plan. They would need to buy some tickets for the train on the other continent. And find some clothes for them.
A few days later they were on the train by themselves. Apparently, the procedure also meant that Harvey would be swallowed up. Before they broke the fountains separating the connection, except for Arthur, who was there.
Kurt had brought a sizable amount of money. He couldn't bring his sword but Layla had been able to store it in the same way as her bat. And could pull it out if they needed. They traveled light with a suitcase with some medical paste and a bit of mythril and adamantium ore. Nothing too much but enough to be small traders making a delivery.
The train chugged along the railway, the countryside had some vast fields and a stream in the distance.
"Beautiful isn't it," said Layla. "Better than those mountains we've been around."
"Well don't get used to it," said Kurt. They would be ending in a hill range. A pass near the main road from cities to ports, normally it wouldn't be a very advantageous place unless you could resupply from a gate, then it would give you a way of attack.
"I know," said Layla.
They had decided the first trip would be a long eight-hour ride. This would get them a little past where they thought the most trouble would start. Hopefully, they will get there before.
They had been asked a lot to show tickets. More than Kurt thought was necessary.
They had made their way to their stop without much trouble. They planned to hop lines by traveling across the land to another railway. They didn't want to be found out very easily.
Finding a spot for the well was easier than expected, the ability to fly gave a lot more options for temporary accommodation. Since presumably no one was looking for it.
So it seemed Kurt's plan was working. He was actually feeling good about being proactive for the time being. He hadn't seen what he'd be attacking yet. They could now wait a few days if necessary, Harvey would be able to keep Barney safe enough now.
Harvey could now slip himself. Which was something Kurt had forgotten would happen. This meant coming back and forth for him was much easier.
"I still don't fully understand," said Layla.
"What?"
"Why?"
"Why what?"
"Why now, why change your insistence on the separation to throw it all away?"
"Ishtar."
"She told you too."
"No, not really. She made it clear to me. Everything I was saying and doing was just delaying what was bound to happen."
"That's true, especially after what she did," said Layla, "and Horus himself, I only said it to be polite."
"What's so wrong with him?"
"You think Rosie was scary? Imagine a person who has a whole pantheon of Gods, who each have a battalion of people just like her?"
"So it's bad."
"Did you see Jessica?"
"Yeah, she basically admitted to telling them everything, while apologizing."
"Well, I think the apology was sincere, but…"
"Yeah…it's a problem."
Layla sat down and put her head in her hands, "Do you really want to do this Kurt?"
"What do you mean?"
"Taking a keep, putting troops there, people are going to react."
"Stop acting like this isn't exactly what you want," said Kurt.
"I didn't want a fucking goddess to come down and tell me what to do."
"So fuck 'em," said Kurt. "Make it the way that's best for us."
"Yes, Kurt," Layla gave a devilish smile, "exactly."
Kurt knew that they had to do something. Staying passive would be a mistake eventually. The world would eventually be looking towards them. That became clear.
Layla talked to Kurt a little about what her plan was for the attack. Kurt enjoyed the idea. Something like that might work. As long as the people there weren't too loyal to anyone in particular
