The elephant in the room were the several fire clan members waiting on the other side of the gate. There was a very visible force of goblins around the gate, but since none of the goblins could actually see the gate, they couldn't exactly do anything but wait.
Layla and Kurt were making their way to the gate, Sara was already there so they at least had eyes on the other side. Kurt still wasn't sure what he was going to do, sure maybe they could get a surprise out but really they were out numbered, and they had no idea what powers the opponents had. And they had to assume they had some being from the clan and on this mission.
Once they got there Sara had met up with them, "So I'm not sure me and Kurt can handle all of them."
"Yes that seems like it would be difficult, I think we should discuss where to go though."
"Where to go?"
"Yes, I would think it's possible there are more than we can see, but if I can close the gate, me and Kurt can run, I can fly and he can jump."
"I assume you had an idea?"
"Yes, I think we should head to the Arrow mountains, my ability to fly and your ability should make finding a place rather easy, and hard for others to get to."
"Okay, but that would mean that Sara would have to be on this side of the gate, that makes things hard."
"I told you I had a plan for this," said Layla, "but, I'm not sure how you're going to take it."
"Why is that?"
"Well I intend to fully open the gate."
"Fully open?"
"Yes, it's currently half closed."
"What does that mean?"
"It means Kurt I intend for you to lead these goblins to the other side and secure the gate."
Kurt stared at Layla, "wait what?"
"You can do that?" said Sara.
"The fact that it is half closed is the more complicated part," said Layla.
"You mean this entire time you could have," said Kurt.
"Neither of you have ever asked me about this," said Layla, "And it was really important until, well now." Kurt gritted his teeth, more secrets. That one sentence basically changed all the rules, apparently the only thing that was ever stopping the goblins from storming earth was Layla, which she was about to not do.
"Still we should do it quickly, we can't have the goblins be seen really," said Sara, somehow talking, the revelation easily. Was she told?
"Well, I guess there is no arguing about it," said Kurt, drawing his sword. "We should probably be ready, Joe, give out some of those new fire spell coins, and be ready to fire as soon as you're signaled. And try not to hit me."
"Wait one second," said Sara, and she made a tense face. Next to her two golems started to form, but they only went up shoulder height.
Layla explained that she was going to need a few moments to open the gate, but she was going to have to be right in front of it making it difficult, as if the other side could quickly jump in and out. Slowly Kurt and Layla walked in front of the gate.
The men on the other side looked at them with a bit of confusion. They were whispering something to each other but sound didn't travel through the gate, or at least this kind. They seemed to be reacting but also slowly. Not sure if they were being lured to the other side. Kurt's sword hung in a relaxed position. He didn't want to think about what was about to happen. All of these men were about to die, and there wasn't anything Kurt could do, in fact he might have to do it.
Could he even do that? Kill a man? This was probably not the best time to ask that question, it wasn't like he was being attacked directly, he was under attack. But it felt different than simply defending yourself. Making sure not to make any sudden movements, not to try to panic them. He hoped they would just absently observe until Layla finished.
One of the men seemed to be shouting to another, the silent scene in front of them. Another man came from around the gate, he must have been on the other side. The man looked at them and immediately pointed at Layla. He must have recognized her, even though she had remained standing, not floating. Guess I have to.
Kurt stepped through the gate and immediately swung a full power horizontal crescent wave blast, causing all the men to instinctively duck underneath it. Layla better hurry.
"They're attacking!" One man shouted. The sound of metal unsheathing surrounded him. Kurt noticed a swing come from seemingly nowhere, but in enough time to block it. He fast, another swing another swing, rapid successions. Too fast. Kurt dove to the left, but another guard was there, taking a swing down, but Kurt had managed a leg sweep causing the man to fall over before he could finish. He turned around, the first man was there again, he seemed to be a blur. He wasn't just fast, he was supernaturally fast.
Behind the man, two large ropes of red flames whipped into the air from someone on the other side of the gate. Just managing to block the swings coming at him. Come on, come on. Layla hurried up.
It had only been a few moments, but it was seeming to take an eternity. The man had an unexpected thrust, Kurt barely moved out of the way, and a shallow cut was made to his side. Kurt was completely on the defensive, he had no time to counter strike. He was being overwhelmed by the number of strikes coming at him.
He had to pay attention to the fast one, but the other was making it difficult, where was the back up. They exchanged a complex exchange of blows, that practice was coming in handy, Kurt wasn't used to being against someone as fast or faster than him. Rolling away from a double attack, Kurt got to his feet again, but the speedster was already there. Another exchange. Kurt was still just blocking Them and barely.
And there he saw an opening, that only he could take, Kurt made a swing at the man's neck, a small almost invisible string of water made a path. The man had moved back avoiding the blade, as Murt knew he would, "shi-Va-Kai"
The line of water started to crystallize, into pointy barbs and shot out, right at the man's neck. The man's eyes widened. There was nothing he could do, no where to go, it was too close, too fast for even him.
As the ice wire sliced the man's neck, BANG! Kurt heard one of the fireballs come through the gate, he felt the warmth of the resulting explosion. His ears began to ring. He stared frozen at the man before him, the ring echoed in his ears, but he could still hear it.
