Mecha Devourer System

Chapter 101: Stuck With Scrolls

"What came out wasn't just some rays of destructive energy."

It was a massive pillar of energy that continuously burst forward, the resultant force strong enough to send Everlearn dragging through the ground until a five-meter-tall mound of earth was pulled up behind him.

When the explosion stopped, his palms slammed into the ground, the sound of melting echoing.

Turning back to the bony titan, Everlearn found its hulking frame slowly turning to ashes that faded with the wind.

CLAAAANK!

But something of it still managed to survive.

Its skull rolled on the ground, coming to a stop two meters away.

He walked forward toward the skull, looking into its ghostly hollow eyes that burned with pitch-black flames.

The jaw moved, a couple of incomprehensible words tumbling out.

"Woe… me… failing… Lord… Achilles…"

Those were its last words before the runes upon its skull dimmed, and the final remnants of it faded into ashes.

The moment it did, the nano gauntlets on Everlearn's hands melted into dark liquid metal that splattered onto the ground, scorching it wherever it touched.

║That's about three weeks of effort, gone.║

The system panel flashed as Everlearn silently looked at the molten liquid.

These things were his creation—a higher version of the Nanophoton Blaster that could give more protection to the hands and eject more destructive energy.

But gathering the materials had taken him over two weeks of battling radiorats in the wastelands, and he had even spent 400 points to obtain additional rare components for the gadget.

Yet all of that was gone, used up from the attack that erased the bone titan.

"At least now I see what they're capable of."

Back in X Guard, Everlearn had never tried out these gauntlets.

He knew they were powerful, but had no idea how they compared to his ordinary Nanophoton Blaster.

Now, he knew.

It was worth creating more of these once he got back to class.

Turning away from the bone titan's ashes, his gaze shifted back to the path between the two mountains, and he walked forward.

When he reached about twenty meters away, he ordered,

"Hey, system. Reactivate Connection."

He gave the command, and in the next moment, the faint connection in his ears reappeared.

"Oh, we've gotten back his connection. Hey, Everlearn, can you hear me?"

"Yes, I can," he responded curtly.

"How? Where is the bone titan?"

"It's dead. Exhausted all of its energy."

"I was protected by the nanosuit, so there wasn't much damage."

He spoke, and a breath of relief rang through his ears from the other side.

"That's really good. You still think you're up for exploration?"

They asked, as Everlearn looked backward, then forward.

"Do I have any other choice but forward?"

There was no portal behind him, meaning if he didn't walk forward, he would most likely be stuck here forever.

What other choice did he have than to brace for danger until he found the path out?

"Very well then, but be more careful," the voice said.

He nodded before resuming his steps forward.

Before the path in the mountain, there was only darkness stretching as far as the eyes could see.

Somehow, he felt the air behind his neck rise, a pre-sign of danger.

But he firmed up his conviction and took his first step into the darkness, disappearing into the path.

The second he did, Everlearn felt a familiar sensation, the feeling of stepping through a portal.

Creeping darkness encroached upon his senses, but in the next moment, it cleared.

He found himself standing in a hall.

A hall of darkness with crimson motes of light whooshing around, providing dim illumination.

"Are these…"

All around, upon the walls, were what seemed like shelves that towered so high into the sky he couldn't immediately see their end.

"Move closer to the shelves," the voice instructed from the side of his ear.

Everlearn walked forward toward the shelves.

It confirmed his thoughts.

"Scrolls," he muttered.

Wrapped together, filling every inch of space within these shelves, were countless scrolls.

"Try picking one up."

His hand reached forward and grabbed a scroll.

It was stored within an object that seemed light yet equally heavy.

He pulled open the cap, then turned it upside down.

The paper slid out, unrolling like a ribbon that fell across Everlearn's feet.

He picked it up, his eyes surveying its contents.

It was difficult to read, covered in strange symbols carved across its surface.

"Can you read it?" Everlearn asked.

"No. I'm not versed in Archrone," the NCEG voice replied.

'Archrone? 'The language spoken by the Nakros.' Everlearn thought.

"But there should be a translator sometime later," the voice said. "I just need you to slowly skim through the scroll with your eyes over every letter."

Everlearn did as instructed.

It took him about two minutes to complete.

"Good," the voice said as Everlearn put the scroll back into its holder before returning it to the shelf.

Turning to look at the endless scrolls nearby, he unconsciously sighed.

"Don't tell me I'll have to go through every scroll."

"Those scrolls, Everlearn, contain priceless alien historical knowledge, and possibly understanding of arcane arts that could potentially save millions of Corers' lives from the next Nakros War."

"Yes, it all has to be recorded. The more, the better," the voice replied as he wrinkled his brows, turning another look at the endless shelves of scrolls.

"And, it's not like your life is in any danger, so… take your time going through them."

"Let's start with five hundred scrolls."

The voice finished, and Everlearn could only sigh tiredly.

He had come here seeking adventure, and now he was stuck going through scrolls.

But that was, unfortunately, part of the mission.

So he started going through each scroll, scanning them one by one.

Whatever these scrolls held was secrets that even though he was the one who found them, the NCEG group would probably consider too high-level for him to possess.

They were only fine with him going through it since they knew he wasn't versed in Archron.

But Everlearn had his own plan.

While he read the scrolls with his eyes, he also had another feature activated.

║Eyes Save Feature Activated!║

║What the host sees is now being recorded for eventual remembrance.║
