They had listed a dozen places to rent from. In the end, Mater shorted the list down to three places.
A small cold storage under an apartment building.
An average cold storage at the edge of the industrial complex.
A small cold storage in a residential area.
The first one was beneath a basement in a rather crowded apartment building. The property owner showed Mater and Selina around. However, Mater decided to skip this place.
The apartment building had too many people and way too many cameras. The black cat didn't want his actions to be constantly under surveillance.
The second cold storage was pretty good. It wasn't directly inside a group of warehouses or industrial factories so there were not a lot of people around. However, that place was too far from Selina's house and the rent was rather high. The owner asked for 5,000 credits a month, which was almost half the price of buying a small cold storage.
Mater liked the place but money was a problem. He kept this place as a backup in case the third place wasn't good.
The third place was actually a former meat distributor shop. It had a built-in cold storage inside one of the rooms, a fully functional bathroom, and a front room that was once used as the shop. The front room could easily be repurposed into a living room if needed.
Aside from using that place as a Glacial Shrine, Mater could easily make this into a living quarter for Aurora. The rent was also pretty cheap, only 2,500 credits a month, half the price of the previous one.
The black cat walked around the house while Selina was discussing the details of the rent with the owner.
He put his paw onto the cold storage and flooded the machinery with Chaos. He read its details and determined the state of the machine.
"This storage can go as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius. It has only been used for around two years. The machinery inside is still pretty new. This thing can go on for another decade easily."
The cat looked into the cold storage. It was very broad, more than enough space for a Glacial Shrine. The house was in pretty good condition also, everything was functionable. A few things needed to be replaced here and there and a deep clean was required. But those issues were easy to deal with.
Mater went back to Selina and gave her a nod.
"We'll take the place, Ash."
Ash, the owner of the house, was a female adult around her thirties.
"We?" Ash's brow furrowed.
"Oh. I meant me and my cat."
"I see. So as long as you keep the noise down and maintain the cold room regularly, everything should be fine."
"Of course."
"Miss Isles. It is none of my business but I have to make sure that you are not renting this place to do some illegal purposes. What are you trying to do with the cold room?"
"Don't worry. Ash. I have a friend that just opened a restaurant and she needed a place to store her food. You can think of me as the middle man between her and the food distributor.
As for illegal activities, you can rest assured that there will be none."
Selina took out the Ankh badge and showed it to Ash. "I am a private investigator that is currently cooperating with the ACPD. Rather than doing something illegal, I catch people who do."
"You're a cop?" Ash sweated profusely.
"Is there something wrong?" Selina asked with her wide bubble eyes.
"Haha. Nothing. Nothing is wrong." Ash had an innate fear toward authority. She was always scared that they might be after her.
"Well. You just need to give me the rent for the first month in advance. Then I will collect the rent on the 10th of every month. Here is the contract."
"Would you mind if I read the contract first?"
"Of course not, Miss Isles."
Selina actually didn't know much about legal contracts. But Mater was there to help here. The black cat flipped the pages around and read the contract carefully.
Ash stared at them for the entire duration. 'That cat isn't normal...'
"Alright. Everything seems to look fine, Ash. Let's sign. Then I will transfer you the amount."
"Alright."
Finally, Mater had acquired a cold place to conduct a Glacial Shrine for Aurora. In his old world, a Glacial Shrine was much harder to obtain.
These machinery cold storage did not exist and he usually had to find a cold place or ask for help from his only Alchemist friend.
Ash left the house and Mater summoned Aurora out from the book.
The naked woman landed on the floor.
"Eek!" Selina quickly closed the door and pulled the curtains over. "You need to keep the clothes on her Mater!"
Mater meowed.
"Clothes can't be stored inside the book as they aren't an extension of her being." Aurora translated.
"Guess I have to bring a few extra pairs of clothes whenever we go out then."
Mater commanded Aurora to turn the freezer of the cold storage to maximum. He then turned to Selina and meowed.
"Master said you should stay outside. The cold storage will be as cold as -20 degrees Celsius."
"Okay then..."
Aurora and Mater entered the cold room. The ice wight closed the door behind them.
This cold storage was a frosted one, meaning that it would gather frost naturally over time and needed deep cleaning to remove the frost. Newer and more expensive models did not have this issue.
But Mater needed the frost and snow to form as it would benefit the Glacial Shrine.
At the moment, there was no frost inside the cold room as the previous owner already cleaned everything.
Mater opened his paw and summoned the Master Signet of the Glacial Seal. Every Submission Seal had two parts, the Slave Signet and the Master Signet.
The Slave Signet was the bright blue tattoo on Aurora's chest while the Master Signet was the one Mater held.
Mater controlled the Master Signet to land on the floor of the cold room.
"Sit on top of it, Aurora." Mater meowed.
"Yes, Master." The Glacial Wight sat down.
"This is going to cost me quite a bit of Chaos... But it is for the best. After this, Aurora can use this Shrine to heal her wounds and regain her Chaos at any time."
Mater closed his eyes. The black cat floated into the air. The Chaos flooded out of him as a dense red fog. Immediately, the lights of the entire neighborhood started to flicker.
Frost and snow formed inside the cold room. A small mountain of ice emerged around Aurora and enveloped her.
