The next day, after waking up Elena went for a little walk in the city. Yesterday she didn't get the time to see anything in the city so today she was going to do just that. Before the start of the war there was not much that she had to do. So she had more than enough time to leisurely sightsee the city.

When Elena woke up it was quite early in the morning. Physically Elena didn't need sleep but she personally enjoyed the pleasant feeling of falling asleep. That's why she just spent only about 2 and a half hours in the bed and was still perfectly fine.

Just after exiting the central headquarters, Elena could see the view of a medium sized city bathing in the first light of the dawn. The temperature was moderate at this moment of time and probably it was the best possible state that she was going to get for the whole day. The headquarters was situated at an elevated ground so she could see the whole city from here. It was really a breathtaking view.

At the very beginning she first went to the barracks. Even tho it was early in the morning, the barracks were still filled with busy people. The number of soldiers petroling the city didn't drop even tho it was very early. Those hardworking soldiers were still full of energy.

As soon as Elena got close to the barracks, some of the petroling soldiers noticed her. Yesterday it was decided that as long as Elena stayed inside the city she would have the authority of a supreme commander here. That means she was even higher than Sandy in the hierarchy.

So naturally the soldiers saluted her and stood up straight. Elena didn't say anything to them but just smiled sweetly at them and nodded her head in greetings and then went past them.

The structure of the barracks was very simple. It was a simple large structure able to hold a large number of soldiers. The ground floor had baths, kitchens and even a casino. And from the second to fourth floors were filled with bedrooms for the soldiers.

One bedroom only had two beds but four soldiers were assigned to stay together. Currently only two soldiers were sleeping inside the room and the other two were petroling outside.

There were several such barracks inside the city and all of them had the same design. Currently there were a total of 35,000 soldiers inside the city so all the barracks were completely filled. After observing this barrack she stopped some of the soldiers and asked them several questions. Those questions were mostly about what they felt about their work, how their life was going while working as the protector of their nation, what their feelings were about the current leadership, so on and so forth.

From those questions Elena could get an idea about the general situation as a whole. What she noticed was that the soldiers had a very strict hierarchy with several levels dividing them. But they could be broken down into three main categories. They were, peasant soldiers who were low level with limited strength. They were at the very bottom of the authority pyramid. Most of them were conscripts who were forced to become a soldier by their respective domain's lord. Normally a camp was supposed to have such soldiers in a large amount, but this camp had none of them here. Only someone who was above level 100 could enter this place.

The second category consisted of soldiers who held a decent amount of strength and were all at least above level 100. They were the elites of the army and were mostly in charge of managing and leading the peasant soldiers. But for this city they were at the bottom most hierarchy as peasant soldiers were not allowed to enter this city.

The last category represented the leadership of the army holding noble ranks. When a soldier became decently strong enough or had done a great deed, they would be given a commander's role. And alongside that they would also be given a noble title just like it was with the adventures. So the army had the record of allowing most commoners to become noble just after the adventurers.

From the conversation with the soldiers she also found out that Sandy was very much loved and respected here in this city. After taking up his job for only about 1 year, he had improved very fast and his charisma was enough to get the respect from his soldiers. He was someone who liked to lead the battle from the front and it was easy for the soldiers to respect someone who also risked their own life alongside them. The aide Saradina was also quite popular.

She so found out that the ratio of females to males in the city was about 70:30. In this world both male and female could grow stronger as this was a world ruled by the stats. So, there was no discrimination between male and females when it came to strength. Actually females had an advantageous position in the strength department as most of the gods were female. But the Supreme Goddesses had used strict measures to ensure that society didn't become a female oriented one as that would not be ideal. Here both the male and the female had completely equal chances for everything.

After the barracks Elena visited the Crafter's District next. It was the place where all the high level crafters lived who were in charge of providing the army with several must needed items like weapons, potions etc.

As it was still quite early this district was not crowded right now. But she could still see that some of the shops had already started their services. Near the weapon's shop one could hear the clanking of metal as they Blacksmith worked hard to create a good weapon. The area of the potion's stores and the apothecary was filled with the pleasant smell of herbs. The same was true for the other areas. It was quite a comfortable feeling to just walk around the Crafter's District.

Elena also entered some of the shops to check the quality of the items and to also ask the craftsmen some questions. All the craftsmen already knew about Elena's identity and authority so she was able to have a very pleasant conversation with them.

She was happy to know that the crafters were all happy to work for the army. Elena was a crafter herself so she knew very well how hard it was to become a really good craftsman. So, she always had a soft spot in her heart for the crafters.

...

The next place in her list to visit was the defensive encampments very close to the border area. The wall surrounding the city was made using a special magic stone and many high level mages had enchanted it for a long time to create a strong wall capable of defending against even the assault of high level individuals. The defensive encampments were also built just next to the wall.

The highest concentration of soldiers were present in this place. About 60% of the whole army was present here. They had a lot of mages in their ranks too. Their most important job right now was to monitor the border and to look out for any spy or enemy soldiers. Mages with good surveillance and detection magic were also in charge of this job. So it could be said that the city really had an iron tight defence.

Elena didn't disturbed the mages and the soldiers who were busy with their tasks. Instead she looked for the soldiers who were on break and had a conversation with them. Here alongside asking them the general questions she also asked them about the situation in the frontline.

According to them the heat in the frontline was getting hotter and hotter. They already had several minor conflicts and the numbers of such conflicts were increasing day by day. From what they could judge from looking at the situation, the chances of a full scale war breaking out within this week was close to 80%.

...

After Elena was done with her visit to the encampments she then entered the Crafter's District once again to have breakfast at a restaurant. The owner of the restaurant was a retired army veteran and Elena had a very pleasant conversation with him during her breakfast.

After that she returned back to central headquarters to attend the daily morning meeting. She had several plans that she wanted the army to carry out and today she was going to propose them to the leaders.

While she walked around the city she was able to notice several minor faults in the defence. They were nothing major about even something minor could be fatal in a war. So she was going to point out those flaws and would also give them some hints about how they could solve those problems.

Other than that she and Saradina were going to reveal the secret information that Elena discussed with her last night. That information was very important and could be the key depending on the situation. Those were all the things she wanted to do in the upcoming meeting.

The atmosphere of war was intensifying.
