Chapter 384: Ch 384: Troubles with Taming

Tomoe had always been someone whose mind was only occupied with her sword. Especially when she was unable to advance in her techniques. But now that she had finally managed to fulfill her dreams, her mind now had some free space to think about other things, like a hobby. Elena was very happy about this new interest of Tomoe's as having a hobby was very healthy.

As this forest had been cleared most of the powerful monsters now it only had some weak monsters left. And those monsters were exactly the ones that Tomoe was targeting. She was quite serious about this hobby of hers as did not just go out to catch some monsters but actually bought an encyclopaedia and a few books with various taming methods written in it.

Tomoe was not really a bookworm and she was also not fond of studying. Even then she bought all these books and that was the proof that she was really interested in learning about various new and useful monsters. But still she did not just start studying after getting the books but instead went to find some monsters first before checking the information about it in the encyclopedia.

...

As soon as they left the safety parameters of the city, they immediately encountered a monster. But this was a harmless bird monster which was only level 5 or so. Even among the harmless monsters, it was one of the weakest. Tomoe immediately opened the book to check the information about the monster. After a little bit of searching, she was able to find the page where the information about this monster was written.

This was a bird type monster called Ioia. It was actually quite famous among the rich with how beautiful it looked with its soft white feathers. But this monster was a bit dumb probably because of its low levels. That was also the reason why it could not be trained to do any complex work. For that reason it was only used as a pet bird for its beauty.

Tomoe was actually quite lucky to immediately find this bird monster after leaving the city as according to the book it was actually quite rare to find this monster. Because the power level of this particular monster was very low, for most of the time other stronger monsters would just kill it as their food.

Tomoe immediately jumped up and caught this monster with her hands. Normally a tamer needed to use many hunting equipments like nets, traps or such to catch this bird but for a powerhouse like Elena, her physical prowess was more than enough for the job.

...

After getting her first monster, Tomoe returned back to the city with Elena. She was quite excited to get her hands on this little bird. At first this bird tried to struggle quite a lot but after feeling that Tomoe was exceptionally stronger than itself, it suddenly became obedient.

Tomoe wanted to continue searching for more monsters like this but Elena stopped and her told her that first she needed to tame this little bird before thinking about any other monster. Just catching it was not equivalent to taming it.

Hearing Elena advice Tomoe decided to first get used to having a pet around her with that little bird before searching for any other pet. The process of taming was very straightforward and there was also a very easy way to judge if someone was able to truly tame a monster or beast.

When the art of taming was first invented, there were quite a few times when some monsters had just acted to become obedient but then had attacked and killed its tamer when it was given a perfect opportunity. So with years of research, many enthusiastic people had been able to create a full proof way to tame a beast or monster.

This was not just a single technique but various kinds of techniques together. Even more new techniques were getting invented almost everyday. Even though the number of tamers in the world was very low, almost all the people who became tamers were very interested in this field. So even with their low numbers, they were able to develop many new things.

...

At first Tomoe had thought that taming this bird was going to be easy as it was quite weak but it turned out that it was not the case. This bird was not getting tamed by her at all. And the reason behind that was actually the stupidity of this species of monster.

Normally weaker monsters easily submitted because they understood that they were not a match for the person trying to tame it. But even though this bird monster understood the power difference between Tomoe and itself, it never thought that submitting to her was an option. Why ? Because it was too stupid to think of that.

The survival instinct of this bird was non existent and as soon as understood that Tomoe was stronger than itself, it had already given up on its life and had considered itself dead. So for that reason it was not trying to protect itself by submitting to Tomoe and she was having a very very hard time.

So Tomoe asked Elena for some advice as the guide books on taming also had no solution for this problem. Actually there were very few people who had tried to tame this bird monster as it was too weak and useless for a tamed monster. Most of the time they were just locked inside a cage after getting caught as a pet for the rich. In that there was no need to purposefully tame it.

Elena did not disappoint Tomoe and she had various ways to accomplish this. Obviously there were some forceful measures but Elena was a kind person at heart. So the method she proposed was the most gentle and at the same time the most effective method.

Elena advised Tomoe to spend a lot of time with the bird and to also love it a lot. Instead of taming it with fear and coercion, it was always better to tame anything using love and affection. This process would actually not be very good for slightly stronger monsters as they had an inherent ferocity and cruelty inside them. But for a weak and dumb monster like this bird, it was probably the best method.

...

So since that day, Tomoe started to always keep the bird with her and gave it a lot of affection. She was not really a cruel person, so loving a pet was not a hard work for her. But as this was going on, the whole city suddenly got filled with excitement. So far Elena and Tomoe had stayed in the city only for three days but even then they were able to feel that the excitement level of the city was unusually high. And the reason behind that was a Magic Tournament.
