Magic was very very famous in this city. So the magic guild always hosted a magic tournament every 5 years. And luckily for Elena and Tomoe they came at the perfect time when the tournament was about to happen. This was the most anticipated event of this whole city and not only millions of people from this city watched this, several more millions also came from other cities to witness this grand event.
Actually the timing of Elena's and Tomoe's entering the city was perfect. If they were even two days late then it would have been harder for them to get any rooms to stay in the city. They were able to enter the city just before the outsiders started to come in great numbers.
There were still quite a few days left before the start of the event but the city had already started to prepare for it. Elena also wanted to find some more information about the event and fortunately for her, the inn where they were staying had a service where they were giving their guests all the information about this event just for a little bit of extra money.
There were obviously other, more cheaper ways to gather information about it. Just asking around various residents would be enough to give anyone a good idea about the whole grand event. But still Elena decided to buy this information from the inn as what they provided was more detailed and had quite a few key information written on it about which the common population would have no idea about.
It was not only Elena who was excited about the situation. Even though she had no intention to learn the use of magic herself, Tomoe was still interested in learning about it as there was a high possibility that her future opponents might be using it. So she was also looking forward to gaining more experience about various types of magic.
This tournament had two divisions. First there was the young mage division where up and coming young mages showed off their prowess. This was something like an opening act of the event and anyone who would be able to perform well here would be able to gain a lot of reputation and recognition.
But the main event was definitely the regular magic competition as even S rankers were allowed to participate in it. Normally in that case, the S rankers were always going to win but here for this magic tournament, that was not the case. The reason for that was the format of the tournament. It was not just combat that would decide the winner of the competition, there were various other things that were judged outside of one's combat prowess when finding the true number one mage.
Still, for most of the time it was the S rankers who won as they obviously excelled in almost every part of magic casting. But about a thousand years ago, a B rank mage was able to become the winner against all odds defeating a S ranker. That was a legendary achievement.
After that a few other people had also managed to achieve the same feat as that B rank mage and with that this tournament had become more interesting as there was a chance for even a lower ranking mage to win if that person was good enough and if luck was on that person's side.

The streets of this city were already very busy but now it was even busier. The third floor did not have much traffic for the last few days but now this floor was also getting a lot of people coming slowly but surely. Obviously that was because of the magic competition event.
This floor was not too busy because it was an expensive floor to be. But the new people who were coming to the city were coming here with the mindset of not caring about money that much. It was something like a rare vacation for the elves who did not like to travel much. So spending some money here and there was not a problem for them. And almost all the elves were crazy rich because of their long lifespan and low needs.
Elena and Tomoe did not find this to be problematic though and actually even liked it. With so many people coming and going, the festive atmosphere was becoming more apparent and that was what they were enjoying. Tomoe had another reason to be happy with the current situation.
With the arrival of so many elves, there were obviously quite a few strong individuals among them. They were also releasing their aura without any restraints. After staying with Tomoe for the last few days, the bird monster who was named Pipi by Tomoe had become very sensitive to auras. So when she felt the aura of so many powerful people, she became scared and unconsciously tried to find safety in Tomoe's powerful arms. In that way, the distance between Tomoe and Pipi had significantly lessened and they were very close to becoming partners.
...
As they were walking on the road while tasting some of the street food, they suddenly noticed a girl sitting on a bench in the park. Obviously there were a lot of people in that park and around them but still Elena and Tomoe were able to notice this girl.
Not only them but many other people also did the same. And the reason for that was because this girl was giving off a very heavy aura of depression. So much so that everyone was doing their best to avoid her.
Tomoe was interested to know why this girl was so depressed. From the way she was dressed in expensive magic clothing, it did not look like she had any reasons to have a lot of troubles in her life, so she was curious to know her reason for depression. Elena was also a little bit interested so they decided to go and talk to her.

Mekina was a young elves who was only over 50 years old and had just graduated from a magic university. She had been one of the top students for the university for the last six years and she was looking forward to having a very good future ahead of her.
But just a few months before her final exam, her bad luck phase started. Even after practicing very hard, she was unable to perform very well in the final exam and was unable to rank among the tops of the first time in many years. That was very depressing as she was looking forward to ending her student life with a bang.
But still she did not give up. As she still had very good grades, she was able to land a high paying job with a reputed magic workshop. This was a dream job for her and she was extremely happy about it.
But her bad luck stuck again and the supervisor she was given was extremely bad. He was a lazy man and was always trying to act dirty with Mekina all the time. This took a mental toll on her and just today she made an elementary mistake. This was a common mistake to make for any newbies and normally no one would have minded it. But she made the mistake in front of the owner of the workshop. So she was immediately fired from the job. And that was the reason why she was feeling so depressed.
