The final was going to take place after one day break to allow the participants to be on their full potential. This was going to be a truly exciting finals as there were not only the three S rankers present in the finals, the strongest A ranker and a genius C ranker was also going to participate in it. This was definitely going to be interesting.
But still, the S rakers were the favourite to win the tournament. In the previous round it was shown that the S rankers were holding nothing back so they were not going to go easy on the other participants. So the chance of an upset happening was very low. But still the people were still hoping to witness something like that as that would be extremely exciting.
...
Currently Elena, Tomoe and Ethor were in a secluded part of the forest doing some training. Actually it was Ethor doing the training and Tomoe was assisting her. As for Elena she was just watching from the side and was giving them down advice whenever she felt like it.
Tomoe was quite impressed by Ethor. When she was fighting against Elena, Ethor did not look like a powerful person at all. Elena handled her too easily. But now that Tomoe was fighting against her with her own self, she was able to appreciate how well she fought.
Ethor had mastered the technique to fight as a mage to a great degree. She knew what her weaknesses were and the way she fought always tried to eliminate as many flaws as possible. She also maintained her distance with Tomoe as allowing a powerful sword master like her to get close was equivalent of seeking death.
But that was not all. The spells that she used were all extremely practical and she was always trying to score a fatal hit. Her spells all looked very beautiful and anyone who were not able to study her spell would think that the spell was completely harmless. But that was the farthest from the truth. And the tactics she used in the fight were also very cunning and even underhanded.
Among the S rakers, in terms of pure magical power Hetharna was at the top. And when it came to designing spells and controlling mana, the headmaster Theorem was the best among the three of them. But if they fought against one another, 9 out of 10 times Ethor would come out at the top. Even if she fought alone against both of them, even if she was not able to defeat them, she would at least be able to hold them off for quite some time.
If this competition was a fighting tournament then Ethor would have been more relaxed. Now she was even a bit regretful that when they were in the ruins, she did not try harder to snatch the magic book from the other two. She was really planning to win the tournament with all she had.
...
The wait of the people was over and it was time for the final to start. Obviously with the presence of A and C rankers, there was not going to be any fight but still the people were looking forward to knowing what kind of competition would decide the winner.
After a lot of deliberation by the magic guild, it was decided that for the final round what would be judged was creativity of the magic caster. This was the main quality for a magic caster to have and to truly grow as a formidable mage. And this was the only way how the lower ranking participants would be able to compete against S rankers.
The rise in the rank brought overall development in all areas. There were not many aspects of a mage that was not affected by the rise in the rank. That was why the test of creativity was the best that the magic division came up with.
Actually to be honest, it was not a very good solution either. All the S rank mages had more experience than the others and in that way they would be able to develop their creativity more than the lower ranking people. But even then this was something that did not get a boost from simply rising in the rank so it was judged to be a good aspect to be tested on.
...
As for how the creativity would be measured, quite a few solutions were given. First it was decided that just allowing everyone to modify a magic formation in a creative way would be a good test, but this suggestion was rejected by all the participants except for one.
That was because the art of modifying a magic formation not only needed someone to be creative but a lot of knowledge about the formations was also needed. And principal Theorem was miles away from everyone in that regard. It was not a fair way to judge and would be way too biased toward Theorem, so everyone except for him rejected this idea.
So, what was the final choice. After thinking about it a lot, a process was found that was able to satisfy everyone and at the same time gave everyone an equal chance.
What they needed to do was simple. Three words would be given to all the participants and those words would be chosen in random by a random audience member. Then the participants had to create a brand new spell that would be able to represent all three of those words. There would also be a time limit of 10 hours for the creation process and that much time should be enough for top rank mages like them to design at least a preliminary magic formula.
Then there would be a total of 500 expert judges who would assign a score to everyone depending on how much the magic they created was able to represent the words that they were given. The created magic should not be too complex to represent the words without other concepts taking up too much area. Those were the things that a person needed be to cautious about when designing the magic formula.
...
Developing a magic formula was a time consuming process and was not a very fun thing to watch for people who were not very well versed in magic. Almost all the elves had some ability to cast magic but there were less than 1 percent of them who also had the capability to create new magic spells.
So to entertain the audience, two A rank mages would be having a duel when the other participants would be busy constructing their magic formula. This would not only be an entertainment for the audience but would also serve as a distraction and obstacle for the participants. With that making the spell would become just a little bit harder task and would make the competition a little bit more exciting.
Finally this competition was about to reach its end.
