While Elena was walking around the market looking for more interesting shops, she suddenly noticed an older demon who was radiating an overwhelming aura of grief. Elena was able to notice him because, in this festive and energetic atmosphere of the grand bazaar, the presence of this sad man was too noticable.
Elena felt curious about why this man was feeling so much sadness and decided to ask him about it. If it was something she could help him with, Elena was ready to lend a hand. So she did not beat around the bush and immediately approached the man.
After seeing her kind smile, Lanchester felt like he could trust her. But talking about such an important matter in open was not good, so he was unable to speak. But Elena was able to guess what he was thinking from his body language so she invited him to have a drink with her.
Even though it was middle of the day, one tavern was still open in the bazaar. Elena took Lanchester to that tavern and ordered a few drinks. On the way, Lanchester had managed to only introduce himself and for rest of the talk, Elena decided to listen to it while having a drink. She did not need the drinks but Lanchester definitely needed it to relax his mind.
After they started drinking with a few side dishes, Elena did not directly ask him about his troubles. She was aware that most of the demons liked to hear about high level fighting stories. So she started to tell him a few to lighten the mood.
As they talked more, it turned out that Lanchester was a super light drinker. After just two sips, his face turned red and his mind went groggy. Elena was extremely suprised by this. As she had no idea about Lanchester's preferences, she had ordered drinks with very light alcohol content. She had not expected someone to get drunk with hair this little.
But this turned out to be a good thing. With his mind intoxicated, Lanchester started to grumble about all his life troubles. As there were other customers in the tavern, she cast a sound isolating barrier around them to not disturb other people with Lanchester's grumbling.
As Elena listened to Lanchester, she became quite surprise. The first thing that surprised her was Lanchester's age. Demons generally had longer lifespan, so even a 500 year old demon could look like a young person. That was quite normal. But the opposite was quite rare.
With how aged Lanchester looked, Elena had guessed him to be quite old, at least a century as his race was quite long lived. But unexpectedly Lanchester turned out to be only 29 years old. In demon standard, he was still almost a child.
She was even more surprised after learning that Lanchester was the head of the Oshi village where they currently were. For someone so young to become the village head, he should be extremely good at his job. This speculation made by Elena turned out to be true.
Lanchester had a special skill which gave him a perfect memory. Not only that but he was also very intelligent and had managed to solve various problems for the village since his childhood.
The people of the Oshi village were quite straight forward. When the elders and even the previous village chief noticed that he was more suited for the job of the village chief, they did not waste any time in making him the head even though he had Just turned 16 at that time.
At the beginning, Lanchester was extremely satisfied with himself after becoming the village head. But as he was still quite young, he started to feel the pressure of managing the village and the responsibility that came with the job over time. He was feeling extremely troubled in his heart but as the villagers were depending on him, he just gritted his teeth and started to suppress his troubles.
For the last decade, he had done a good job at managing the village but at the time of this year's festival, he made a mistake and ended up accepting the plan to go against the Conna village. If he was in his normal state of mind, he would have definitely rejected this plan as it was very risky. The villagers trusted him so they would have accepted his decision without doubting him.
But his fatigue caught up with him at this time and he ended up making wrong decision after wrong decision. And now his village was on the verge of losing all their hard earned money. The amount they were about to lose would take the village almost a decade or more to earn back. And this was all his fault.
...
After telling Elena about his life, Lanchester fell asleep. After listening to his troubles related to the alchemists, Elena felt troubled. What the Oshi village was doing was not really evil. They were trying to compete with them in business. The Oshi village could have used their status as the organiser of this year's grand bazaar to mess with the items of the Conna Village but they did not do that.
Instead, what they were doing was a bit petty but was quite common in business. Elena found it very amusing. And currently Lanchester was not worried about winning against the Conna Village but about not losing all the money of the village. So Elena decided to help him out a little bit. She also felt bad for the alchemists who had suddenly lost their job. Becoming an alchemist was not easy and Elena was well aware of this. So she decided to include them in her generosity too.
...
After waking up from his sleep, Lanchester felt extremely refreshed. With all the worries burdening him, he had not managed to get a good night's sleep in a long time. So after this rare sleep, he was feeling extremely good.
But after a few seconds, he came back to his senses and remembered what he was doing before going to sleep. He was not the type of drunk who forgot everything he did while being drunk and remembered complaining about his life to a beautiful lady he had just met. But then he became confused as currently he was lying done on a bed.
He heard some sound from outside the room and getting curious, he went to check it out. To his utter surprise, he found himself in the large warehouse which the hired alchemists were using as their base. But the current situation of the place was completely different from what he had seen before.
Previously all the alchemists were depressed and the atmosphere of the warehouse was filled with gloom. But now, those same alchemists were working with energetic looks on their faces. Lanchester had no idea what the reason behind this transformation was.
He saw the only alchemist with some experience and went to ask him about it. And what he was told made him dumbfounded.
