At the dark corners of the building at the four-way street, screeching sound echoed, jolting the birds that were picking up beans scattered on the ground and letting them flee with only two beans in their beaks.
Shadows stretched on the green wall, moving from the base to the roofs and vanished when the moon's ray fell on them.
And in the street leading to where the building with a large bell hanging at its top, nine young men holding weapons and halfway dressed walked, moving toward where the shadows stretched from.
Inside the closed transparent window of the building they walked by, children moved, stopping at the window and placing their palms, waving at the nine young men.
All nine young men waved back at the children and moved into the dark section, vanishing completely without making any unusual sounds.
When the guy with black hair erupted from the dark corner and appeared at the other side, his eyes widened as he saw young people like himself jumping onto each other and eating, tearing the other's flesh with their bare teeth.
"Nicholas, where are you…?"
Voice came from the dark section at the back of the black-haired young guy, forcing him to turn a trembling and shaking body to those now erupting from the darkness.
When all eight young men stepped out, their expressions changed as Nicholas pointed his sword spear toward the young men now behaving like monsters.
Before Nicholas could say a word, one of the human monsters rushed forward at great speed, padding its hand in the air and opening its mouth wide like a zombie. But as it neared them, it stabbed itself on Nicholas's spear already raised and stretched forward.
"WTF…!"
All eight young men shouted as they saw the pierced human pushing himself forward and wanting to grab Nicholas.
A cold gust swept through the narrow street, carrying a rotting stench that forced the eight young men to cover their noses.
As the stabbed and blood-stained human reached where Nicholas's hand held on, a sharp blade sent a whshhh sound as it sliced through the air and cut off the head, and even as the head rolled and slammed on the ground, the headless body stretched itself forward, wanting to grab Nicholas.
At that moment, a guy standing at the right side of Nicholas raised a big hammer and slammed it on the shoulder of the headless being, letting its body go limp just for a few minutes.
There, a high-pitched scream came from the mouth of the hopping head, drawing the attention of those standing in the far distance toward the nine soldiers, then surged toward the hammer guy and stabbed its teeth at his boot.
Luckily for the hammer guy, his boot remained the only thing stabbed with the sharp teeth. The guy slammed the hammer on the head, crushing it and making blood splash into the dust.
After pulling the hammer from the head, the headless human turned limp, finally dead.
When Nicholas pushed the smelling corpse from the spear, he and the eight others stood there, clutching the handles of their weapons tightly and stared at the direction the half-dead humans were coming from.
But after slamming their weapons on the first three beings and letting them fall to the ground, a loud screaming sound echoed from behind them, letting all eight young men lose focus and turn back, forgetting about the ones stretching their bodies and standing up.
Children ran toward the windows, closing them in their rooms as screams tore through the night, placed their palms at the windows and stared at the direction the sound erupted from.
Some buildings at the alley the human zombies were locked, but for the large door the green building had, it remained open and let air gush inside, sending breezes inside.
Under the streetlight Max leaned on, Gray stood there staring widely at the bright screen of his smart device and scrolling through a set of names marked in red. And when he saw a name attached to a picture that resembled Wang's, he stopped scrolling and screenshotted the picture.
Gray turned his gaze at Max, smiled, then handed him his smart device. "Take this, you'll need it as the proof in case anything happens…" he said, his voice carrying two emotions in it, both fear and love.
As Max wrapped his fingers around the sides of the square device, he saw Gray moving toward the military truck and opened the door.
'So all this while… it was him who was sending our locations to them…' Max thought, tilting his gaze from Gray's direction and stopping at the gate, where lots of young soldiers stood there in their full war uniforms.
When Max tilted his gaze back to the truck, he saw Gray walking toward him, holding the two kitana swords he'd been seen using all along.
At the far distance in the remote part of the barracks, Clara stood at the side of the open window, staring at the birds jolting in the air as if a natural disaster was set to take place.
And on the bed, Kai lay on the bed, blinking countless times before opening his eyes, jolted up from the bed and stared at Clara.
"Where is brother Gray?" he said, his voice echoing in a sharp and loud tone that sent shivers through Clara's bones.
Clara brushed her palms on her face, inhaled, then turned toward Kai, smiling.
"He'll be back, he's… he's just making sure everything is properly in place."
By just listening to Clara's voice, Kai had a feeling that that wasn't the actual reason at which Gray had left him there in Clara's care.
Without knowing what to do and still feeling sharp pains gashing through his skin, Kai calmly rested his back on the white bed, but never let go of the dagger clutched tightly in his right arm.
As Kai tried closing his eyes, he saw two of the shadows he'd been seeing standing at the locked door, looking at him and shaking their heads. With the expressions and signs the shadows gave him, Kai couldn't move out, no matter how hard he tried pushing himself from the bed.
Every time he tried, the level of the pain increased, letting him scream, especially when he tried standing on the ground.
During all those struggles Clara stood there, shocked.
At the entrance of the barracks, Gray and another twenty young soldiers stood hesitated before moving
