As Gray and a few of the young soldiers walked out of the barrack's gate, a dying breeze flew across their faces, raising the tip of their shirts.
Loud screams echoed as Gray and the soldiers moved past the trash bins and stopped at the mouth of the alley. Seeing countless children and adults run toward them, Gray raised his right arm, letting the fifteen squad following him stand guard.
"What's happening?" Gray said, stopping a fair lady who bumped into him and was about to flee.
When the lady raised her head and looked at the lieutenant she cherished most, tears dripped down from her face and fell.
She turned, pointed a trembling hand at the left side of the road where she ran from, "The… the… my… sisters are killing each other…"
She said, her voice breaking on every word that came out of her wet throat.
At the sight of a figure dragging its leg like a paralyzed person and emerging from the dark end of the road, the lady Gray held by her shoulder broke herself free and dashed forward, crying.
As Gray and the soldiers stepped forward, a thick, nauseating stench of blood rushed, crawling into their noses and clinging to their tongues. Gray lifted his chin slightly, narrowing his eyes as the dying breeze shifted again, carrying screams and dragging sounds.
The soldiers behind Gray shuffled uneasily, forcefully tightening the grip on their weapons which trembled faintly.
Then at the far end of the road, figures appeared behind the one that had exited completely, her soft and face visible under the moon's gaze.
From behind her, men and women – both young and old – dragged themselves forward, their bodies jerking unnaturally and making blood ooze from their cracked skin.
Their eyes turned hollow as all of them fully emerged from the dark area and stared in the direction Gray and the few soldiers were at.
Within seconds, a low groaning chorus rose, echoing between the streets and the buildings. And in that instant, the tinted windows glowed as lights turned on in the buildings at which Gray and the soldiers stood.
Gray raised both arms, signaling his men to stop, then turned his gaze at the window where a six-year-old girl had pushed the curtain sideways and was staring deep into Gray's eyes.
A sudden chill ran down Gray's spine as he saw the girl dash away from the window, place the curtains back, and turn off the light.
The wind stilled, leaving only the sickening dragging of flesh on the ground remaining, but changed when a door-opening sound echoed.
At that moment, one of the zombified adults lunged forward, wrapping its arms around the small girl Gray had seen minutes ago, and tore her left arm.
Seeing how the fresh zombified adult clung itself to the girl, he rushed forward, pulled out his katana sword from his back, and chopped the zombified adult's head off.
Thinking it had been killed, Gray saw it still moving the bleeding girl forward, as the head hopped on the ground toward where its body was.
At that moment, Gray screamed as he saw two young girls that had been zombified jumping on two of the soldiers he was with. "WATCH OUT!!!"
Hearing and turning to the direction the two soldiers now lay on the ground helplessly trying to free themselves, another two of the soldiers moved forward, kicking their boots on the girls and sending them flying.
As one of the zombified girls crashed on a working light pole, she screamed, groaned, and turned hastily toward the soldier that had kicked her.
Suddenly, all the lights in the buildings that were close and far turned on, followed by footsteps and door-opening sounds.
Gray's heart heaved as he saw countless families stepping out of their houses and wanting to have a look at what was happening.
…
As the dying breeze flew across the faces of the soldiers sleeping at the gate of Bion City, Rodney and the three other soldiers jolted up and picked up their weapons.
"Did you hear that?" Rodney said, tapping the shoulder of the man holding the sickle.
For seconds, the man didn't say a word; he simply stood up, sniffed the air, and turned sharply to the building closer to the wall.
"That smell… I think I remember smelling the same air the day after Joe's body was picked up from the laboratory and was being placed in his casket."
The man said, standing there shocked, but still couldn't figure out why he was having the feeling of death.
After several minutes of trying to reach out to those at the barrack's gate, the man grabbed his dagger, placed it at his side, and inhaled deeply.
"Have you notified them?" Rodney said, fear filling his voice as he neared the man.
The man stayed quiet, stared at the manner in which the lights in the buildings a few meters away from the city's wall were turning on.
"And what carries that smell, because it's too bad to inhale?" Rodney asked, tearing part of his shirt and wrapping it around his mouth and nose.
The man turned his gaze slowly at him, exhaled, and closed his eyes, "Death!" he said, tightening his grip on the handle of the sickle and cracking his eyes open.
At that instant, the two other soldiers standing lazily straightened their backs and stared at the buildings, their gazes filled with death.
Meanwhile, outside Clara's window, strong wind blew, carrying the scent of death and the dried leaves.
Clara, who leaned at the other side of the window, turned as a leaf flew up and stopped by the window.
When Clara pulled down the glass, the air and leaves stopped entering, yet she could feel the pressure the night carried.
After two minutes, she turned, looked at the boy who lay on the bed and had healing plaster covering his entire body.
Clara moved from the window's angle, sat beside Kai's head, and placed her right arm on Kai's forehead. She smiled, brushing her fingers through Kai's hair, then stopped the moment her finger touched one of the wounds untreated.
Seeing how the boy trembled, Clara stood up, opened the drawer from which she pulled the healing plasters, and wrapped some around Kai's head, sealing the wound.
But at that instant, the back of Kai's palms glowed as he saw two of the shadows roaming about in the room enter him through his feet.
As the shadows climbed up his body, tiny sparks of light glowed on the cloth that was covering Kai's body.
Seeing how scorching the sparks were, Clara moved to the bathroom, brought out a bucket of water, then poured it on Kai, thinking it could stop the sparks.
The more she poured the water on the boy, the more the sparks came out as if they were regenerating themselves with the help of the water.
…
At the center of Bion City, crashing sounds and screams tore out as smoke danced at the windows of the building into which the zombified humans dashed.
And at the end of the street stretched long, five men dressed in ninja outfits surrounded Wang.
Wang tore his gaze on them, one after another, and smiled.
Just as two of the ninjas dashed forward, Wang defeated them in a blur without even drawing out his weapon.
The moment the other three dashed forward, a loud voice echoed from behind Wang, causing the ninjas to stop and turn in the voice's direction.
And from the shadows, Kang and Marcus stepped out.
When Wang saw Marcus, he smiled and moved toward them, placing his arms at his back and leaving the ninjas stunned.
Kang, who stood behind Marcus, raised his sword as he saw the man wearing the Sword Sect Military uniform moving toward them.
Despite the manner in which Wang saw Kang ready to pierce the golden sword into him, he smiled, shook his head, and turned his gaze at Marcus.
And when the two met, Wang hugged Marcus, "It's been years since we met… brother…"
