"After we saved Nelly, our timer reset. The moment the last kidnapper was killed, the clock reset. It was a reward for saving Nelly."
Drake's father sucked in a breath. "The system gave you a quest to save Nelly?" The dimension never gave quests like that. For a dimension master heir, the only quests it gave were the hidden quest, also known as the ascension quests.
Drake shrugged. "It was just a side quest. We didn't even get a quest until we chose to save her instead of completing the ascension quest."
"You chose to save her instead of completing a timed quest?" he asked in shock. "If you fail a quest, it's a death sentence. You die if you can't finish it in time if the quest is timed."
"Dad… I can't sit back and leave Nelly in danger if there is something I can do about it. We chose to save her. It wasn't just me. We knew the consequences. As soon as we decided to save her, we received a quest. When we left the tavern, we received our timed quest. We were lucky it was in the same direction as Nelly. When we got her back to Draco Town and took out the three kidnappers, the quest was complete. Our reward was a reset on the ascension quest timer. We teleported back to the cabin, which cut a lot of time off the quest. You said the tunnels were different. What was different about the tunnels?"
"Everything was essentially the same, except in the third tunnel. In the third tunnel, there should have been only two tunnels, not three. Dropping blood in that circle was not in ours. The book should have been in the chamber of knowledge, not in that extra room. In ours, that tunnel did not exist. We didn't have to open a secret room and go back and forth between tunnels to complete the combination. The combination was what you did on the pillar. Everything should have disappeared, and the book should have materialized." His father explained.
Drake thought about it for a moment, then shrugged. "Maybe it's different for each set of heirs." After sucking in a breath, wondering if he should ask, he elected to ask his father about Bren. "Do you know a man by the name of Bren? He lives in this world but is from Draco Town."
His father shook his head. "No… why?"
"Your father brought him here. I wanted to know the laws about bringing people from the dimension here to live. Just because someone was brought here doesn't mean it was allowed." Drake said. He wanted to know if Nana asked him to bring her to the ordinary world, he could do that without consequences. "I don't want to break the laws of the dimension. My gut says that there is a reason for the laws that are in place."
Drake's last words shocked his father. Heirs were never told about the laws. Only after they take over completely do they know the laws. "What do you know of the laws? This is something you find out after you take over completely."
"I don't really know anything. I have gut feelings about things. For one, a dimension master or the heirs can't kill anyone from the dimension unless they attack first. In our first quest, I had to incapacitate three men. My gut told me I couldn't kill them. As for Nelly, I felt a strong need to go after her. I would have anyway, but there was… a gut feeling that my duty was to save her. My gut tells me that we're put in place to protect the dimension and those who live there. Leaving Nelly to her fate is going against protecting the people," Drake explained.
"What about the barriers. How did you know how to do that? There was also that flash of energy that decimated the beasts. I want to know about that too."
"I just did it by instinct. I wanted a barrier, so I placed one. I needed to clear the tunnel, so I cleared it. It was all instinct. I didn't know I could do it until after I had already done it. It felt like something natural to do," Drake explained. "When I cleared the tunnel, they were leeches. There were lots of them. How do I ask the dimension for permission when I want to do something that I don't know is allowable or not?"
"On your last quest, you will receive an orb to ask the dimension for permission. We used it once. That orb we used when we were trying to see what was wrong in the dimension before your second quest. That was the orb we received on our last quest." Drake's father explained.
Before his father could say anything else, he stood up. "I need a shower, get something to eat, and make food to add to my book. I need to make lots and lots of sandwiches. Things that don't need to be cooked. We learned that having something like that is beneficial. Chad had thought ahead and packed sandwiches. It was a good decision. We were able to eat when we couldn't cook anything. I want to make as many as I can. If they're stored in my book, they won't go bad. When will you have everything delivered? You said you still had the list and would do that for us," he asked.
"While you're doing what you need to do, I get it done. I'll add a few things again that will help. What are you going to do after you're done with everything else?"
"I need to go talk to Bren. I promised him I would speak to Nana for him. She gave me a letter she wanted me to give to him."
His father nodded before leaving his bedroom so that Drake could do what he needed to do.
***
Drake was in his car. His friends were with him as he drove over to the toy store that Bren owned. He had Renn and Ruby sitting on his shoulder, watching the scenery as they made their way across town.
Pulling into the small parking lot, they got out and entered the toy store. Bren was standing at the counter, helping a customer. The woman was the only customer in the store.
Drake and his friends waited patiently while he helped the woman. She paid for her items and then left. Bren looked up. "Good afternoon," Bren said, smiling. They could tell that he recognized them.
Drake pulled out the small parchment with the wax seal. "Nana gave us this to give to you," he said, handing Bren the parchment. "She sounded shocked that you were alive when we first told her, but she cried with tears of joy knowing that you were still alive. We can wait if you want to write her back," Drake suggested. "I don't want to rush you, but we are trying to head back in a couple of hours."
Bren took the parchment carefully as if it were delicate porcelain. He nodded in understanding, but his eyes were glued to the parchment. He sat down on the small stool behind the counter and carefully opened the wax seal, opened the parchment, and read his letter.
It appeared to be short. It only took him several minutes. Whatever was written made him smile. His eyes glistened with unshed tears. He looked up at Drake. "I'll be right back," he said in a shaky voice, before standing and heading to the back room at the back of the store.
When he returned, five minutes later, he handed Drake a folded bit of parchment. Similar to the one Nana had given him, there was a wax seal that held the parchment closed. "Please give this to my sister," he said, still smiling.
Drake nodded, taking the parchment. "When we come back to this world, we'll come here. I'm sure she will have another letter for you."
Bren nodded, smiling. "Thank you."
Drake and his friends headed out of the store, then returned home so they could store everything that his father had ordered. He hoped that it had already arrived. He wanted to get back to the dimension and start their next quest.
When they arrived, pallets of items were being moved into the garage. He noticed that there was an entire pallet filled with baked goods, and another with flour, sugar, and other baking items. There was even a pallet of eggs. Drake smiled, seeing everything that was there.
His father walked up to him, handing him a small book. "This is a cookbook that you can use to make cookies, bread, or things like pancakes. All the ingredients in this book are on one of these pallets," he said, then handed him another book. "This one is another storage book. Each page has more items. We included two more cabins. If all three of you can open the cabins, then you all can open the two inside the book. We talked about it and thought that you might all want your own home."
Drake smiled. "Are there more items that are going to show up?" he asked.
His father shook his head. "This is it. Once the truck leaves, you can start storing it."
"Good, because we're leaving tonight," Drake stated, then looked at his friends, who nodded in response. " We'll stay at the Inn in Draco Town tonight.
