Chapter 471: Chapter 471: A Bit of a Guilty Conscience (3)

But now, her grandmother had changed her mind. Her granddaughter was just as outstanding and was indeed worthy of Nathaniel Nathan. The only thing that worried her was the massive difference in their families’ social standing. Plus, with Zachary Preston currently ill, Vera would have no one to back her up if anything were to happen.

Therefore, they had to approach the couple’s future with a long-term strategy, laying the groundwork early. The first step was to win Master Nathan’s favor. That way, Vera would have a powerful ally in the future and wouldn’t be at a disadvantage.

If it had just been Vera and her grandmother discussing this, she might have brushed it off with a joke and not thought much of it. But Nathaniel Nathan was right outside!

Her face flushed red in an instant. She hurriedly said, "Grandma, I get it! You should go back to bed!"

With that, she hurriedly pushed her grandmother out and shut the door. ’This is killing me! Why did Nathaniel have to show up right now?’

Her grandmother laughed heartily. "Look at this girl, getting all shy. Alright, alright, Grandma won’t say any more. As long as you know what’s what."

When Vera heard her grandmother’s footsteps heading downstairs, she hurried to the window and opened it.

After Nathaniel Nathan came inside, he looked at her with a half-smile. "Your grandmother is certainly thinking far ahead," he asked. "I’d say she’s quite farsighted. What about you? What do you think?"

Vera’s heart was still pounding. She gave a little laugh, deflecting his question with one of her own. "Did you miss me? Is that why you came to see me?"

"You’re reading too much into it. Why would I ever miss you?" Nathaniel shot back immediately.

Vera let out a soft laugh. Just then, she heard footsteps on the stairs again, followed by her grandmother’s voice. "Vera, did I happen to leave my hair clip in your room?"

Her grandmother had a habit of using two clips to hold back the hair at her temples. Being a frugal woman, she had used the same clips for several years and couldn’t bear to replace them.

Vera knew her grandmother treasured those clips. Turning her head, she spotted a black clip on the bed. Now came the problem: her room was so small, there was no place to hide someone once the door was open!

And here was Nathaniel Nathan, a whole living person, right there in her room!

’If Grandma found out Nathaniel was in her room, she’d get a serious lecture!’

She quickly called out, "The clip’s here! Hold on a second!"

After speaking, she looked at Nathaniel and gestured for him to leave. His expression was as calm as ever, but he pointed a finger to his own lips. If he didn’t seize an opportunity like this to claim a little perk, he wouldn’t be Nathaniel Nathan.

Vera had no choice. She stood on her tiptoes and gave him a quick kiss, but he showed no sign of leaving.

Vera grew anxious and questioned him with her eyes. Outside, her grandmother was already knocking on the door!

Nathaniel gave her a subtle smile. Instead of going to the window, he walked right up to the door and opened it.

Vera’s eyes flew wide, but it was too late to stop him. The door swung open. He stood hidden behind it while she was positioned right next to it, making it look exactly as if she had been the one to open it.

Even for someone as calm and composed as Vera, her expression was starting to crack. Surprise and shock were still written all over her face. Noticing this, her grandmother asked, "Vera, what’s the matter? Are you not feeling well?"

Vera quickly covered with a yawn, saying, "No, I’m just a little sleepy."

With that, she hurriedly handed the clip to her grandmother. "Grandma, you really need to break this habit of misplacing your things."

Her grandmother chided her gently, "Listen to you, a mere child, lecturing me! If you’re sleepy, then go to bed!"
