Chapter 628: Chapter 627: I’m Not Taking the Blame
Wang Fang let out a soft sigh, her voice tinged with self-reproach. "Xv Fang made a mistake this time, and his father and I are both largely to blame. We didn’t raise him right."
"His father is a workaholic. Every day, he’s either seeing patients or busy reading, researching, and running experiments. He has practically no time to discipline our child."
"I was the one primarily responsible for raising and educating him, so it’s inevitable that my approach had its shortcomings..."
Seeing that Yan Feifan was just listening silently without reacting, Wang Fang had no choice but to ask, "Mr. Yan, surely you can’t deny that Xv Fang is good-natured, and that his medical knowledge and practical skills are quite solid?"
Yan Feifan nodded lightly in agreement.
Wang Fang sighed again. "That’s because Xv Fang has idolized his father since he was a child. He was determined to become a great and famous doctor just like him—one who always puts his patients first and is deeply loved by them."
"Oh, I forgot to mention, Xv Fang’s father is Xv Jiande."
Hearing this, Yan Feifan was visibly stirred. "The neurology and diagnostics expert from Union Medical College Hospital, Dr. Xv Jiande?"
"The very same!"
Wang Fang confirmed, then added with a hint of pride, "Mr. Yan, this year, Mr. Xu has been officially nominated as a candidate for academician in the medical division of the Chinese Academy of Sciences."
"Congratulations!"
Yan Feifan offered his congratulations but couldn’t help but add, "Xv Fang never mentioned his family background."
"I never would have guessed he came from such a distinguished family."
Wang Fang said with doting affection, "That boy... he idolizes his father, but he’s also very stubborn. He doesn’t want to live in his father’s shadow and hopes to far surpass his father’s achievements through his own hard work."
"That’s why he chose clinical surgery and didn’t want anyone to know who his father is."
Yan Feifan nodded in understanding.
After all that, Wang Fang still hadn’t heard Yan Feifan offer any opinion on Xv Fang’s mistake, so she had to broach the subject herself.
"Mr. Yan, I only just learned from Dr. Miao that that boy, Xv Fang, has made a mistake."
"I only have a rough idea of what happened."
"As soon as I heard, I knew what happened. Someone took advantage of his weakness—his compassion got the better of him, and he acted without thinking things through."
"Mr. Yan..."
Wang Fang stared intently into Yan Feifan’s eyes and said, "Please, considering that Xv Fang’s heart was in the right place and that no serious harm was done, give him another chance!"
Yan Feifan said evasively, "Dr. Wang, I only have a brief understanding of the situation myself, from what a colleague told me over the phone."
"Now that this has come out, both the municipal ethics committee and our hospital’s disciplinary committee will be launching an investigation."
"The outcome is no longer something I can decide."
"It will depend on the findings of the investigation and the decision of the authorities."
Wang Fang gave a faint smile. "I’m well aware of the process."
"The thing is, Mr. Yan, you’re no ordinary person. You’re a recognized genius doctor. It’s no exaggeration to call you the foremost figure in Binhai’s medical community."
"People in Binhai’s medical community will listen to you."
Yan Feifan waved his hand dismissively and said humbly, "Dr. Wang, you’re giving me far too much credit."
"I’ve just been fortunate to achieve a little something. In reality, I’m still a young doctor with much to learn and a long way to grow."
He mused aloud, "And because of that, in this particular case..."
Yan Feifan slowly laid out his analysis. "Perhaps the authorities will handle this even more strictly, to make an example of him. They might think it’ll serve as a wake-up call for me, to keep me from getting reckless and going astray in the future."
At these words, Wang Fang’s expression instantly soured.
She suddenly realized that what Yan Feifan said made perfect sense.
’Those old-timers, with their twisted logic about ’nurturing talent,’ might actually do exactly that.’
’But no matter how severe the punishment, it wouldn’t be enough to truly shake someone of Yan Feifan’s current standing.’
’Xv Fang, on the other hand, was a different story.’
’As the one held principally responsible, he’d be completely crushed.’
At this thought, Wang Fang became frantic.
"Mr. Yan, you’re already well-established and can weather any storm, but my Xv Fang can’t."
"So how about you take the fall for this?"
Yan Feifan’s expression darkened. "Dr. Wang," he demanded, "what are you suggesting?"
Having blurted out the words on impulse, Wang Fang’s thoughts suddenly sharpened.
"Mr. Yan, all you have to do is admit you were aware of the situation—that Xv Fang had reported it to you and acted with your permission."
"If you do that, Xv Fang’s mistake won’t seem nearly as grave."
"With your current medical achievements and standing, Mr. Yan, even if you receive some form of punishment, it won’t fundamentally harm you."
"Mr. Yan..."
Wang Fang said with utmost gravity, "As long as you agree to this, Mr. Xu and I will owe you a massive favor."
His face grim, Yan Feifan asked mockingly, "Is this how the euthanasia incident was handled as well?"
A flicker of humiliation and anger crossed Wang Fang’s face. She said in a low voice, "Mr. Yan, that was merely a mistake Xv Fang made during emergency treatment. It wasn’t intentional. Please refrain from wild speculation."
Yan Feifan scoffed. "Let’s put aside whether the euthanasia incident was an intentional ’error’ or an honest mistake for now."
"But as for him treating a vegetative patient without authorization, Dr. Wang, you can’t possibly defend that, can you?"
Yan Feifan pressed, his tone sharp, "With a personality so soft that he caves the moment someone begs, are you really going to tell me he’s suited to be a doctor, Dr. Wang?"
"Do you really want to see him make an unforgivable mistake and end up in prison before you finally give up on this path for him?"
Wang Fang’s expression darkened at his words.
After a moment of silence, she said slowly, "This incident has confirmed it for me. Xv Fang truly isn’t cut out to be a doctor."
"Mr. Yan, I can promise you..."
"After this is over, Xv Fang will no longer practice as a frontline clinician. I will arrange for him to move into a research institution or a role in health administration."
"However, he cannot have his medical license revoked."
"This is a critical moment for Mr. Xu’s academician selection for the Chinese Academy of Sciences. If this incident gets out, his candidacy will be seriously impacted."
After a pause, Wang Fang continued in a pleading tone, "Mr. Yan, please, consider this a personal plea from Mr. Xu and me."
"Just help Xv Fang this once."
Wang Fang switched back to an emotional appeal. "Xv Fang hasn’t been working under you for long, but I know he must have been completely dedicated and meticulous in carrying out every task you assigned him."
"When he talks to me on the phone, he’s expressed his admiration for you, Mr. Yan, on more than one occasion. It even made my husband, Mr. Xu, a little jealous."
"I know you haven’t formally accepted him as your student, but in his heart, he already regards you as his mentor."
Yan Feifan met Wang Fang’s gaze and said, "Xv Fang has already proven he isn’t suited to be a doctor."
"I am clear on this point, and so are you and Dr. Xv."
"Being strict with him is better than being indulgent."
Yan Feifan said with finality, "I will not take the fall for him."
"Xv Fang is not a child anymore."
"He needs to take responsibility for his own mistakes."
Seeing that Wang Fang was about to speak again, Yan Feifan stood up and said, "Dr. Wang, my decision is final."
"I have a conference to attend this evening, so you’ll have to excuse me."
Wang Fang watched Yan Feifan carry his tray to a distant table to resume his meal. She stood up to follow him.
But she was intercepted by a stern-faced young man.
Under the watchful eyes of everyone in the room, Wang Fang didn’t dare cause a scene. Filled with resentment, she had no choice but to leave Baining Hospital...
