Chapter 228: Harmful Medicine

Chapter 228: Chapter 228: Harmful Medicine

Fu Xiaoxiao had never felt getting out of bed was this hard. She lay there with her eyes open, doing mental prep for a long time, and in the end still lost to that back that just wouldn’t straighten up.

"That bastard man, is he a freaking animal?" Looking at the marks all over her body, Fu Xiaoxiao ground her teeth in anger. Way too much.

Her whole body was sore and swollen, her back wouldn’t straighten, even her throat was so dry it hurt.

She couldn’t remember how many times that jerk had wanted her yesterday; just one time after another, like some wild beast that didn’t need rest, clearly he’d just finished the last round.

She just floated and sank in that sea of desire; no matter how she turned, she couldn’t escape those huge waves.

Forcing herself upright, Fu Xiaoxiao spent almost ten minutes just getting out of bed.

"Squeak!" Fu Xiaoxiao’s bedroom door opened. Lu Chen saw that she was finally up and ran over, excited.

"Mom, you finally woke up." Lu Chen had been waiting a whole day; it was already evening now. He’d run over to check on Fu Xiaoxiao so many times, and finally she’d woken up.

If he had to wait any longer, he was going to go get Uncle Xu to save her.

"Did I sleep that long?" Fu Xiaoxiao looked at the sky outside; it was already sunset.

She had no idea how long she’d slept.

"Mom, you slept a whole..." Lu Chen counted on his fingers. "A long time."

He gave up in the end; he only knew Fu Xiaoxiao had slept for two days, but he couldn’t count the hours on his fingers.

"Then have you two eaten?" Fu Xiaoxiao looked at Lu Chen and asked worriedly.

"Dad brought food back for us from the canteen, and he brought some for you too, but you didn’t wake up, so Dad split it up for us to eat." Lu Chen said.

"What do you want to eat now? Mom will go make it for you." Fu Xiaoxiao rubbed his head and asked with a smile.

Lu Chen shook his head. "No need. Mom, you should rest first. Dad said you’re not feeling well, you have to rest to get better."

"Me and Big Brother can eat at the canteen. We’re not picky." After saying that, Lu Chen pouted. "It’s just that the canteen food isn’t as tasty as Mom’s..."

They were used to eating Fu Xiaoxiao’s cooking; the canteen dishes weren’t bad, but they just lacked that something that made food delicious to them.

They looked so wronged.

Fu Xiaoxiao chuckled, soothed by her son’s thoughtfulness.

She slowly stood up and moved a bit. Her whole body was still sore, but once she pushed through it, it felt much better.

"Mom!" Lu Lin was doing the homework Fu Xiaoxiao had assigned. Seeing Fu Xiaoxiao get up, he thought Lu Chen had gone in to disturb her, and frowned at Lu Chen. "I told you not to bother Mom while she’s resting. Why did you run in there again!"

"...I didn’t wake Mom up." Lu Chen pouted, unhappy.

"The little guy didn’t bother me, I woke up on my own." Fu Xiaoxiao smiled and explained for Lu Chen, then looked at Lu Lin. "Why are you still writing?"

Why was he still doing homework? She’d assigned it yesterday; he should have finished by now.

"I’m learning from you and assigning myself homework." Lu Lin handed his exercise book to Fu Xiaoxiao. It was full of questions he’d written for himself, copying her style.

Fu Xiaoxiao glanced over it. Lu Lin had picked it up quite well; he knew where his weaknesses were and could assign himself work with ease.

"Really good. Looks like you’ve actually learned it." Fu Xiaoxiao was very pleased.

She wasn’t afraid of a child learning slowly, only of a child refusing to learn. Clearly, Lu Lin was the type who was willing to learn.

Lu Lin had already started school late. Without being discouraged, and working this hard, it was only natural he would improve.

"Mm." Having Fu Xiaoxiao’s approval made Lu Lin very happy.

Fu Xiaoxiao went to the kitchen to take a look, and simply decided to make braised rice today—easy and convenient.

After sleeping all day, she was starving.

She held Lu Chen and quizzed him on his lessons, when suddenly cursing came from outside.

"I went to the trouble of getting this medicine for you, how can you not drink it! For the sake of your big fat grandson, you can’t stop taking this medicine!" Grandma Wang’s voice was shrill, grating to listen to.

Fu Xiaoxiao frowned. What was going on?

"Mom, don’t go. Today Grandma Wang and Aunt Zhang are definitely going to fight. Dad said not to get involved in their mess." Lu Lin grabbed Fu Xiaoxiao, not letting her go out.

"Did something happen?" Hearing Lu Lin say that, Fu Xiaoxiao stayed in. She looked at the two little guys; they obviously knew what was up.

"It’s like this! Mom, listen, I’ll tell you..." Lu Chen raised his little hand and blinked at Fu Xiaoxiao, indicating that he knew.

"Okay, you tell me." Fu Xiaoxiao chuckled, pointing at Lu Chen for him to talk.

Lu Chen stood up and told Fu Xiaoxiao everything that had happened yesterday.

"Basically, Grandma Wang spent a hundred yuan to get Aunt Zhang a set of fertility medicine, saying it guaranteed a baby boy. Then Big Brother said you shouldn’t just take medicine randomly, it could wreck your body. Aunt Zhang brought the dregs over for Big Brother to check, and Big Brother said it wasn’t any good medicine, that taking too much would hurt her. Grandma Wang got mad and said the master she found was the most powerful, that there’s no way she’d be cheated."

"Then Dad came over and took us home, saying Big Brother is just a kid and what he says doesn’t count."

Lu Chen’s explanation was all from his own perspective. Fu Xiaoxiao roughly pieced the scene together and looked at Lu Lin.

"Dad said if Aunt Zhang really had something happen, Grandma Wang would blame it on me, so he wouldn’t let me keep persuading her." Lu Lin had taken Lu Feng’s words to heart and explained to Fu Xiaoxiao.

Fu Xiaoxiao nodded. "Your dad is right. You two shouldn’t butt into this anymore. As long as Zhang Xiaomei knows the medicine is bad for her body, that’s enough."

"If she still insists on taking it, then if anything happens, she can’t pin it on you. We’ve already done our duty by warning her. Whether she listens or not isn’t something we can control." Fu Xiaoxiao felt Lu Feng had handled it correctly.

They were just neighbors. Doing their part to remind her was already good; there was no need to treat this as their own problem.

"But listening to the way Grandma Wang is cursing, clearly Zhang Xiaomei doesn’t want to drink the medicine anymore." From Grandma Wang’s ranting outside, most of it was blame, accusing Zhang Xiaomei of failing her good intentions.

"Mom, listen!" Lu Chen lifted his head, ears pricked.

When Fu Xiaoxiao stopped talking, she immediately heard Zhang Xiaomei crying outside the courtyard.

"Mom, can you stop hurting me, okay? Don’t I know my own body? After taking this medicine for so long, I only feel worse and worse. Now I don’t even have the strength to walk. Do you really think this is good medicine? It’s obviously trying to take my life!" Zhang Xiaomei was crying as she spoke.

She knew her own body best. She’d kept Lu Lin’s words in mind from yesterday; that night she’d deliberately skipped the dose and didn’t drink it, and that night she finally slept soundly.

When she took the medicine, she never slept well, constantly dreaming and being jerked awake, waking up drenched in sweat.

On top of that she still had to work every day, and her body was getting weaker and weaker. Before, she could carry quilts; now even lifting a thermos took effort.

That made her start to wonder if it really was the medicine that had wrecked her health.

Then this morning Grandma Wang discovered where she’d poured the medicine out and kicked up a fuss.
