Chapter 3399: Demon Record (22)

Chapter 3399: Demon Record (22)

An Yujun saw her daughter’s dead and became consumed by rage. Her eyes widened with fury.

Ragged gasps rattled in her throat. Her lips trembled, but she was unable to form a single word, until finally, she collapsed and fell unconscious.

Presumably, she couldn’t accept that her children had been killed—and in such a brutal manner.

Ning Shu looked at Nangong. He killed monsters as easily as slaughtering chickens and treated them like creatures at the bottom of the food chain.

Humans and monsters… both believed themselves to be the supreme beings.

Watching his two children die right before his eyes, the snake king’s eyes turned scarlet. His body expanded and grew larger and larger, as if he intended to burst through the binding ropes.

The snake king let out a roar. His eyes were so red that they looked as if he were crying tears of blood.

“I will make all of you join my children in death! You will pay with your lives!

“Eagle, you’ve seen how humans treat monsters. If you continue to oppose me today, I will fight you until one of us is dead. I’m holding you responsible for my children’s deaths, too. Everyone here must die.”

The snake king was consumed by rage. Anguish filled every fiber of his being.

The flames of hatred seared the snake king’s sanity.

He spat out the demon king core. It spun rapidly, unleashing an immensely powerful burst of demonic energy.

“Everyone die! Just die!”

He wished he could annihilate the heavens and the earth right then and there.

The demon king core was spinning furiously, but in the blink of an eye… it vanished.

Yep, it was gone.

The snake king’s roaring came to an abrupt halt. He couldn’t process what had happened.

Just then, the sound of a finger snap rang out. Everyone’s vision cleared, and they felt as though they had suddenly woken up.

The snake king was still bound by the demon-binding rope, but… the two little snakes in his embrace were still alive.

Nangong was standing beside the bureau chief, who was tucking the demon king core into a small leather pouch.

Ning Shu was a bit bewildered. What just happened? Was that an illusion? An illusion created by the bureau chief?

Was this her method of attack?

Ning Shu was so startled forgot all about enjoying the spectacle before her. Such an imperceptible form of attack—she had to be extra cautious.

The snake king looked equally dumbfounded. His demon king core had been snatched away.

The bureau chief turned to Nangong. “Finish off the snake king. Keeping him alive will only bring trouble.”

Especially since the snake king could command thousands of snakes. If those snakes gathered, it would have a massive impact on the city.

The snake king gritted his teeth. “You cheated.”

Nangong walked over, pulled the two little snakes from the snake king’s embrace, and—just like in the illusion—dismembered them right there and then.

This time, it was no illusion. It was real. As the snake king’s offspring, if he died, those two little snakes were the most likely candidates to become the next snake king.

An Yujun, who had fainted upon seeing the illusion, would never get to see her children one last time.

The snake king was completely stunned. He had been tricked out of his demon king core by cunning humans, and he had watched his children die before him twice. It was enough to shatter his haughty pride. Had humans become this formidable?

Without the demon king core, the snake king had virtually no hope of turning the tables.

He glared hatefully at Ning Shu. If not for this stupid eagle, he wouldn’t have been trapped here, and none of this would have happened.

Stared down by the snake king’s venomous gaze, Ning Shu spread her hands. “Well, I didn’t see that coming either.”

She had thought he might turn the fight around, but it seemed the bureau chief—this task-taker—was simply too skilled.

With the item recovered, the bureau chief was in the mood to talk to Ning Shu. “Come with me to the Special Investigation Bureau.”

Ning Shu took two steps back and said with a smile, “You can say whatever you need to say right here. There’s no need to go to the Special Investigation Bureau.”

The bureau chief tilted her head, looking unexpectedly innocent. “What are you afraid of?”

“Sis, should I kill the snake king before skinning him, or skin him first?” Nangong asked the bureau chief.

The bureau chief turned to Nangong. “Kill him first. Don’t drag it out. Delays lead to complications.”

Ning Shu watched the bureau chief, feeling that the woman had shifted all her attention onto her.

The snake king was dealt with… was it her turn now?

She was likely one of the bureau chief’s targets too.

Ning Shu tapped her finger, and the temperature in the room began to rise. The snakes that had been frozen immobile started to slowly revive.

The heat intensified until the water turned into steam. The snakes hissed and flciked their tongues as they slithered chaotically around the room.

The bureau chief frowned at the mass of writhing snakes and looked at Ning Shu. “What is the meaning of this?”

Although the snake king was bound, the snakes were awake, giving him a few foot soldiers to command. Hissing, the snake king directed the snakes to attack the Special Investigation Bureau agents.

Nangong, the big boy, stood in front of the bureau chief, blocking wave after wave of snake attacks.

In front of Ning Shu, a wall of water appeared. The little snakes couldn’t get anywhere near her, blocked effectively by the water.

Ning Shu observed the bureau chief. It seemed her illusions only worked on sentient creatures with thoughts, emotions, desires, and weaknesses. Against these little snakes that operated on pure survival instinct, her illusions were useless.

With hands clasped behind her back, the bureau chief peered at Ning Shu through the water barrier. “What exactly are you trying to do?”

This demon had been sitting on the fence the whole time. He appeared to side with the snake king, yet deliberately revived the frozen snakes for him to use.

It seemed she was wary of her as well.

The bureau chief didn’t know whether to call this demon sensitive or just paranoid.

Ning Shu spoke honestly, “Sister, I really don’t want to go to the Special Investigation Bureau. I want to live.”

The bureau chief looked a bit helpless. “When did I say I wanted your life? You have a persecution complex, don’t you? Why would I kill you for no reason? Why would I make an enemy out of you for nothing?”

Ning Shu blinked. Put that way, maybe she was judging a gentleman’s heart with her own petty mind.

“Then why must I go to the Special Investigation Bureau?” Ning Shu asked while spreading her hands. “I’m genuinely afraid that if I go in, I won’t come out. That place isn’t exactly gentle to monsters.”

While Nangong stood in front of the bureau chief, huffing and puffing as he slaughtered snakes, the bureau chief and Ning Shu stood facing each other. There was an odd sense of tranquility amidst the chaos.

The bureau chief suddenly smiled. It was a dazzling expression, and she looked like flowers in full bloom. “You really are sensitive. If you don’t want to go, then don’t. Seeing you scared like this… It makes me actually look down on you a bit. I thought you were someone I could work with, but forget it.”

Ning Shu didn’t get angry. Reverse psychology didn’t work on her.

On the contrary, this only confirmed her suspicion. This person might be coming for her—specifically for her ordinance imprint.

She wondered if the soul inside that woman’s body was male or female. If Ning Shu could inhabit a male body, there was no reason a male task-taker couldn’t inhabit a female one.

From now on, she wouldn’t just be battling wits and courage with the people of her task worlds, but with her ‘colleagues’ as well.

The things she possessed were simply too tempting.

It seemed she would need to exchange points for more protective talismans in the future. That way, even if she failed a task and faced erasure, the amulet would take the hit for her.

The path of the strong was arduous, but Ning Shu didn’t fear it.
